Why do so called knowledgable fans think next season is the last opportunity for the Leafs to be competitive, just because they have players all ELCs? Washington won the Cup with a number of player veterans, star players on their third contracts. Pittsburg wins Cups with high priced veterans, plates they drafted on the team. This argument is the Leafs "last change", hardly factual.
The Weber to Leafs has been discussed endlessly, most Leafs fans hate it. All Montreal fans love it. If Weber is so valuable , can't he traded to another team. He can't,
First, I never said it was Toronto’s last chance, but it’s one of the best they’ll have. Having a star player on an entry level contract is rare opportunity.
Second, Washington, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Los Angeles won Stanley cups because they had key players performing at a level greater than what they were being paid.
For the Capitals, it was players like John Carlson, Tom Wilson, Jakob Vrana, and Brett Connelly. For Pittsburgh was guys like Matt Murray, Jake Guentzel, Connor Sheary, and Brian Rust. And even Crosby, Malkin and Kessel. Pittsburgh is paying those THREE players $25M total, which might seem like a lot, but consider that next season, Toronto will likely be paying Tavares and Matthews $22M for the TWO of them. Chicago is paying Kane and Toews $21M combined, and starting next year Doughty and Kipotar will make $21M combined for the Kings. Speaking of those teams and players, the Kings and Blackhawks combined for 5 Stanley Cups between 2010 and 2015, but since Kane and Toews signed their extensions in 2015 and Kopitar signed his in 2016, neither team he won a playoff series.
The point is that money matters. Starting next summer, Toronto is going to be battling the salary cap every season in the Matthews-Tavares era. It doesn’t mean they can’t win, but this is one of, if not the absolute best opportunity they’ll have with this group.
