Interesting idea, but 6.5 mil is an overpay for Hanifin, and you only have a bit over 1 mil in cap space with Connor and Laine's ELCs ending.

Yup, next year I suspect the Jets let Myers walk and Vesalainen would replace Perrault that’s 9.6 million. With 1million in room, assuming the cap goes up by 2 million, that’s 12.6 million plus Mark Stuart’s buyout .5 million is off the books. with 1.7 million going to their replacements (Niku and Vesalainen) leaving 11.5 million for raises. 8 million raise to Laine on top of what he’s making now- 8.9 million, 1million raise to Wheels -6.6 million (long term) and 2.5 million raise to Connor 3.4 million on a bridge deal.

Makes sense! Wheels might run more (also, don't go long-term, he's 31), but Laine might run less. Well though out!

Offer sheets don't happen. It's the owners way of not letting salaries from skyrocketing. End of story

ACGM is about what the optimal moves for GMs are more than what GMs will actually do. Especially this one. Offersheets are, in theory, fair game.

You’re right, it’d have to be 6yr deal instead of 8.
6x 6.5 = 39
39 doc by 5 is like 7.8 which would mean the Jets would only surrender one 1st and 2nd,3rd I think. So the AAV would have to be higher than 6.5
6.7 x 6yrs would make the compensation

Terrible cap management, Hanifan isn't close to a 6.5m player.

If the total value of the contract divided by 5 is more than 8.12 million than its 4 1st, but at 6.7 x 6yrs, div by 5 = 8.04 million so it’s still only 2 1st, a 2nd and a 3rd.

no doubt it’s an overpayment, but Hanifin isn’t the type of player you can get in a trade without giving up a dougie Hamilton. If the Jets can only give up two late firsts (I’m assuming) a second and a third the overpaying is worth it considering how good the whole roster would be for their window. Plus he’s still going to get better he’s only 21, especially for a defenceman. A big part of the concept is for the Jets to have Hanifin for 6 years, as cheap but skilled players on ELCs come into the lineup over the next couple years and remain cheap to counter balance the big contracts. Vesalainen, Appleton, Niku, Samberg and maybe even Gustafson.

The contract I see in this thread, is 8 years x 6.5M for Hanafin. That equates to a total of 52 million over the term which divided by 5 is 10.4M. Unless I'm missing something that's 4 x 1sts. I understand your math there but that's not what the thread has him signed at.

You’re right, I changed it to 6.7 x 6 in the comments only after dcc94 pointed it out.
