M.A. Fleury was drafted first overall; I think it will need to be something extravagant like that to pry Gibson away from the Ducks as well. (Ya Loov!)

As bad as the Gibson trade is, the Laich trade has absolutely no value for the Blues.

As if Stamkos Signs for less money (AS A UFA) than Kopitar did with his own team.....Try north of 11M maybe. Good try tho

Most high caliber players go for a person, pick, and prospect.....why is it bad?

I put little to no diligence into my posts because I'm just messing around. None of the ones that I do are "MY" team really. I am more into the responses/suggestions people make. Makes for good hockey talk.

The Laich trade won't happen even if you retained more salary. At least not with STL. They don't need him. To another team that is rebuilding? Thats possible though. He still is a good character player.

As for the Gibson trade. As much as I like Puljujarvi, Gibson is the top goaltending "prospect" in the league. Since he's now played enough to no longer be considered a prospect, i can't exactly say that anymore but the fact remains. The guy is going to be a star goalie. Your telling me a potential 20 year old Carey Price isn't worth a Puljujarvi? Leafs already have scoring players. they need a goalie that can be the back bone of the team. Without it, Nylander, Hyman, Reilly, Marner etc are not going to do jack squat. Gibson is established, young and cheap. What more would you want? He sets your team up ahead of where they would be than if they took Puljujarvi.....

Look at the Habs without Price. Goaltending is the most important position in Hockey. It's more important than a potential 20-30G winger. Especially when you have a couple potential guys already.

If you look at adjusted save %(adjusted for location of the shot), Gibson has been about as good as Cam Ward or Kari Lehtonen over the past two years. He's been the worst goalie in the league on high danger shots. Granted he's only 23, but given the difficult in predicting future goaltending performance, giving up what's almost a sure thing would be insanity.

Yet he had excellent overall statistics, was an All star and Ward, Lehtonen are not. There are some truths to advanced stats but they do not tell the whole truth. Given his age and progress, he's trending towards elite. Even Carey Price had some shaky numbers in his second season. Many believed that the better statistical Halak should of been kept instead of Price those many years ago..... Goalies take a little longer to groom. Saying Puljujarvi is a sure thing is the same as saying Yakupov was a sure thing. I do think Puljujarvi will be a good player but will he be a 40 goal guy? I don't think so and statistics show how rare it is for a forward to become an "elite" scorer nowadays. So adding a top goalie now since finding a top goalie is WAY harder than finding a potential 20-30 goal scoring winger should be paramount especially since the Leafs have a bunch of very good forward prospects already. I personally would make this move.

The biggest shame the Leafs can do is assemble all this talent and not give the right support in all areas of the game to be able to win with them. Bernier will be gone, Sparks aint going to be a #1, Bibeau is a decent prospect but nothing special, top UFA goalies are seldom available, trading for a top goalie is rare because its hard to replace them, etc etc. And yeah yeah, keep thinking you'll be able to sign Price as a UFA. The Habs management will trade any other player in the Habs organization before letting Price walk as a UFA. Unless you get lucky and land a top 5 drafted goalie in future years, when handed a chance at a good, young, cheap number 1 goalie, you got to take that gamble.
