Description
Its no secret that the leafs need to do something about their defense. With Forbort, we get a LHD thats essentially a younger Hainsey but substantially better. He would give us somebody that can play 18-20 minutes a night with Hainsey and be a strong defensive 3rd pairing.

We could package a few picks and prospects along with gardiner for Trouba. Most likely, he doesnt stay past the season, this way winnipeg get a defensman capable of putting up 50 points and pairining him with big buff would allow them to cover up for his brain farts. Trouba would pair perfectly with Rielly and give us a top pairing for years to come and someone we can play 22 minutes a night.

That would leave Dermott with Zaitsev where they can play 18-20 minutes a night as well and really round out our defense.

Long term the pairings could be something like:

Rielly-Trouba
Dermott-Zaitsev
Sandin-Liljegren
Forbort

Sucks to give up Brown but with our top three lines, the last line would only be playing 8ish minutes a night, so might as well get better where we need to, plus Grundstrom, Engvall, Leivo, Lindholm would all be capable of fill that role or we can sign a few players for cheap.

The picks is esentially swapping 3rds and downgrading from a 1st to a second but not really a huge price to pay in order to fix the defense. We can offer Trouba 7-8 million long term next year and have the core cemented for a minimum 3-4 years.

?????. Speaking to Kings fans, they don't think Forbert is good enough to be a dependable NHLer. Because of Trouba's public contract squabbles, he has turned into a Norris candidate.....he's not. And why do you think the Leafs "need to something about their defence". Sure it can be better but it did finish 12th last year in GAA, with almost indentical l numbers to as Cup winners Washington. So the extra year Trouba over Gardiner, what would be the cost? I don't disagree with the trade because of the extra year, but really with those two Dman additions are the Leafs any better?

I dont think Trouba is a Norris candidate by any means, i just know that the showing by Hainsey in the playoffs last year was downright pathetic. Also, while the leafs may have tied the capitals in GAA, they also let up a crazy amount more shots. By adding these guys i think we would have defensive D-Men that could really limit shots do Anderson doesnt have to stand on his head. As for Forbort, he is 6’4” more than 210 pounds, averaged 20 mins on a deep LA defensive core and was a +18 (for what its worth) and is signed 2 years at less than 3 million. He is not the next coming of Orr, but he is a dependable defensive guy thats only 26. He and Hainsey should be able to decrease our shots surrendered along with Trouba at the expense of some offense in Gardiner but i think our forwards can more than make up for it plus Zaitsev should rebound and pick up some slack.

Id love it if that were even remotely possible but with Big Buff and Tyler Myers on the right side, i dont see them shelling out 4.5 over 6 years for another right D, their left D is what is their glaring weakness.

How's about Kap, Liljegren for Trouba, Dano and a 2nd?

Jets actually have decent organizational depth at LD. Niku, Samberg, Stanley along with Chiarot, Morrissey

Yeah but their best one is probably Morrissey and while young, he only put up 25 last season and played 20 minutes. Gardiner really gives em someone that can play 22 a night and put up 50 points as the second option behind Rielly. He gives them a lot of offense and balances out the defense. A top 4 of gardiner, buff, Morrisey, Myers should be really effective.
