Why would the Preds accept this? McCabe is fine, but Ellis is far and away better. Plus if we assume the Sabres are going to take a significant step forward with a roster now including Skinner, Ellis and Hutton then the value of that 1st round pick plummets.

Have to remember... The Preds are in the middle of a Cup window. Any trade won't be to take a step backwards.

Alright then lose him to FA for nothing. Sabres can just sign him then without giving up a 1st and young roster players/prospects.

If Ellis would sign for 8x6.5 his contract with the Preds would be done months ago. Even with the lower state tax he wants more than that. My guess is that his ask is around 7.8 per year. The most I would give him is 6.8 mil per year and that is only recognizing that the cap is going up and he has been underpaid for the last few years.

So the only option is to make a bad trade or lose him as an FA? He could still re-sign any day.

I agree that one of the top 4 will have to go but there's no need to rush into a trade that doesn't help this current team win a Cup within their 3-5 year window.

Most around Nashville media (not assuming where you live) think Ellis is asking somewhere 7-7.5 which looks pretty close on market value. Anything under 7 is probably a bit of a bargain.

I have no issue with trading Ellis (although trading Josi may be the smarter long term move) but it has to enhance the current roster where the true need is another big time scorer.

I live in Nashville and haven't seen those numbers though I don't follow all of the fan blogs. I think the McDonough extension (6.75 per) is the exact comparable Ellis should be looking at and anything more is an overpay.

Agree the McDonagh extension is a pretty solid comparable. Given Ellis' offensive capability (11th among all D with 0.73 PPG last season, tied with Doughty/Jones and just ahead of Subban/Josi) he might can command a bit more.

If the predators give him that they will have to trade josi or subban

Distinct possibility. The argument could be made that trading Josi would actually be the smarter roster move.

Why is Josi the smarter option to move? A couple have posted that now.

The guy is a beast and his numbers are wayyyy better than Ellis and McDonagh.
