Speedy Oil

Created by: Grievous
Team: 2018-19 Edmonton Oilers
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 16, 2018
Published: Aug. 16, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The roster is not very good and the salary cap has been terribly managed, this team needs a facelift badly, but some good players and prospects will have to be moved to make it happen.
In reality Chiarelli will probably sign Kevin Bieksa and Scott Upshall and the Oilers will struggle to stay at .500, oh well, at least some heads are going to roll in this organization.....

RNH gives the Canes the Center depth they lack, Lucic + Kassian add the toughness that the owner thinks they lack.

Hamilton eats Faulk’s lunch + his salary is $6,000,000, and the owner is all too happy to exchange Lucic’s salary $3.5 mill ($6 mill cap hit).

Carolina loses a potential stud in Necas and some good young prospects, but Carolina has a lot of good young talent and can afford to part with them.

Edmonton trades Strome, Russell & Benning for oft injured Tanev, beat-up Sutter and young Virtanen. Giving Vancouver younger and “healthier” NHL vets to support the re-build. Edm adds picks in consideration of retained salary.

Detroit is in a terrible spot, they are in cap hell and have too many No Move and No Trade contracts, so something has to give. Edmonton gets AA & HZ for 2 young, feisty fast players on cheap deals that can score a bit, plus some really good defence prospects, which the aging Wings d corps will need in 2-3 years.

Edmonton sends the vet playmaker Zetterberg for Haula. Zetterberg to help mentor Karlsson and provide more leadership in sin city.

there are way to many people on this site who have these fantasies of other teams taking their total garbage contracts and under performing players for their talented cheap young talent.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Not sure why people on this site like to trash others, or are surprised that anyone might have a different view of a transaction than them..... because all this site is about is fantasy GMing, but carry on.

Detroit and Vegas deals not only do not make sense but also aren't close in values, also isn't zetterberg retiring?
So in summary, underpay by EDM in Carolina deal, take out foegele and the 2nd and two 3rds then fair
Change one of the 3rds in Vancouver deal to a 1st
Huge huge overpay to Detroit, take out Edmonton picks and remove bear and Virtanen
Zetterberg and 2 6th might get u a 7th so why is Vegas trading haula and two picks lmao

Okay, I have considered your suggestions, and see your points, disagree with your take on the Carolina deal. It is 3 NHL players, one a top 2 Center and in Lucic a vauable player to most GMs in the league on a desirable contract to the frugal owner. In exchange for a 3rd pairing D man in Faulk, the rest are not yet bonafide NHL players. To get a younger C like RNH will cost more, full stop.

Not sure how Carolina has to send 3 high picks plus a grade A prospect to Edmonton and still get stuck with Lucics contract. Faulk's and RNH's value are pretty equal. So Edmonton should be sacrificing more if they want to move Lucic.
If youre Carolina why not just move Faulk 1 for 1 instead of trading prospects and 3 picks to get lucic and kassian? Lol

Despite what you think nhl GMs think about lucic. They're not about to throw away the leverage that EDM needs cap space. They're going to use it against them. And how in the world is lucic's contract desirable to anyone?? If he's frugal he would hate it more! Because you're sure as hell not getting value for dollars spent

Faulk is only a third pair in Carolina. Anywhere else, he's top 4, and in some cases top pair. In no way whatsoever is Lucic's contract desirable. Why do you think they want to move it so badly? And you somehow managed to paint Zetterberg as a broken down retiree and a rejuvenated stud in consecutive lines. The justifications you gave for all of these deals in the descriptions are ludicrous.

For teams who do not want to spend, but need to use cap space, Lucic is a $6 million cap hit, where actual salary is $3.5 million/year. That has value to teams like Carolina. Faulk is opposite with $6 million salary, but a $4.1+ million cap hit. If you know anything about Lucic, you would know he is a leader, which have value on young teams and he is still feared and respected.

Dundun is a frugal owner, this has appeal to him, as does toughness, apparently. But you seem to be better informed than me, I've only been watching hockey since 1974, so thank you for the enlightenment.

Unless this is Opposite Day, I don't think you understand the meaning of th word "ludicrous". Nowhere have I written anything negative about Zetterberg....unless you view "mentorship", "leadership", and "premier playmaker" as negative things.... On many teams Faulk is a 3rd pair PP specialist. He is not a good defender.

I know what ludicrous means, I have an education. You put Zetterberg with one foot in retirement, saying that AA is the penalty for it. Then you send him to Vegas. Which is it, retiring or not? You're not getting AA there. As for Faulk, you are in the minority, because he is not a "3rd pair PP specialist" on "many" teams.

Zetterberg was recently quoted in Sweden as never intending on completing his contract when he signed it.
His plan was always to retire before the end of the term. The desert climate is good for old bones, he might feel better living there and it might change his intended retirement date. If he retires, the Wings will be stuck with his contract and that would be a big problem for them.

Regarding Faulk, he is 3rd pair in Carolina and they have to pay him $6,000,000 for the next 2 seasons in this role. If that is the case they will be paying TVR $2.3 million for 2 yrs to be the 4th RHD. If nothing changes, that's brutal GMing, but it also puts Carolina in a bad position when it comes to a deal.

I highly doubt Carolina will be getting a good return for Faulk. He will most likely be moved in October and you can see for yourself what his value is (it's not what you might expect).

You are grossly misinformed on Faulk's value. As for Zetterberg, again, you can't have it both ways. You're not getting AA as a bonus for flipping him.

Don't get me wrong, I believe rnh is an extremely underrated player and most definitely a #1 Center but Necas is special and Faulk is top 4 dman so definitely not worth giving those up for rnh plus lucic, if just rnh deal but lucic isn't worth it for car

Zetterberg for Haula and you honestly think you're getting Haula when Zetterberg' career is likely over. Get real. And how is Z going to mentor Karlsson when he's done. We're not dealing Z if he can play.

Oh well sorry for offending your delicate wealth of experience... But it seems all that time watching hockey doesn't help you understand contracts. He's being paid 3.5 this year in salary but His signing bonus was already paid July 1 which was also 3.5. He then gets 6, 4, 5, 4m his next 4 years. 4.75 avg money owed. The majority is signing bonus which no owner likes. He will also be 31 with those 4 years remaining. With his foot speed already not the greatest and the NHL getting faster every year, he could become obsolete real quick. But if he's such a great teammate and leader for young players, shouldn't EDM keep him? Lol
Its ridiculous to think Carolina would have to trade 2 good prospects and 3 high picks for him and Kassian. EDM will have to pay to take lucic of their hands. Deal with it... If he even waives his NMC lol.
Also, Faulk is not a 3rd pairing Dman lmao. He averages 23mins of ice time in his career! That's top 4 minutes. At least 30 points a game his last 5 seasons playing for a perennial bad team. Where do you come up with this stuff?

LTIR only works if you are over the cap, and only subtracts the money over the cap. It does NOT give a team cap room, it is just a write-off of an overage. Enjoy the season! laugh[/quote]

I agree with you, but Faulk isn't a top 4 Dman on most teams anymore IMO. I've been following him closely the last couple of years. He produces offense, but he gives up more 5 v 5 then he gets.

Also a big red flag was information I got last year that Faulk was letting himself go and gained a few pounds during the season and seemed more interested in off-ice festivities then working on his game.

Plus he was getting walked on in a handful games I watched him play last year. I'd honestly rather see Edmonton sign Franson on a PTO and have him on the team than Faulk. This deal was more about acquiring Necas more than anything by capitalizing on a meddling owner who wants a tougher team, TBH.

I am not offended at all, you don't know what I know and I don't know what you know, all you and I know of each other are our opinions, which everyone has a right to. The attempted personal digs are what are ridiculous.

You are correct (actually $4.5 million the next five years) thank you for pointing out my mistake. Yes you are right about everything Lucic, and in reality he is not going anywhere and my team is stuck with him. I crunched his numbers a couple months ago and he is not done as a player yet. There was something off about him, his focus was just not there. He hit a shitton of posts and missed a lot of gaping nets and passes that he typically made in previous seasons. He was getting as many chances and had one of the lowest shooting %age of his career.

I hated the deal when it was signed, but he's on my team and I have to cheer for him. I figured his issues were related to family stuff/expectant wife, etc. He is a very proud man, I think he is a much better player in 2018-19...

See my comments in previous post about Faulk. Undoubtedly somehow my team will end up with him, but I don't want him on my team.

Not sure why you wouldn't want Faulk on your team. I don't think EDM scored a lot from the back end and actually being on a team that could play well I think would really help him. I think it's tough evaluating a player that plays for a team that is losing more often than not, especially a Dman.
Klefbom should bounce back though. Was basically hurt the whole season, was dealing with a personal loss. Must have been tough on him. The team in general should bounce back.
As for Lucic, well you were certainly not alone in not liking his signing lol. Sadly his contract is tough to move given the signing bonus structure. Max salary that could be retained is 1m. I'm a big Hall fan, I hated seeing how that turned out. It sucks seeing a contract decision(s) really hamper your team. Being a sens fan I feel your pain.
