This would be matched by Leafs.

True but if they do avalanche can offer 8 mil which won't get matched because then Toronto def couldn't afford marner and Matthews. They'd be losing picks but Ottawa's 1st they gave would give the avalanche no second thoughts because they could walk away with Hughes.

8mil for 7yrs would make the compensation 4 1st rounders which Im not sure AVS are willing to part ways with, but otherwise as a Toronto fan.. if someone offersheets Nylander it better be Avs since I like them a lot.. It definitely would hurt, oh boy it would hurt badly, but we will get over it possibly..

8 mil per would only be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The price of 8 mil per would completely **** us (Leafs) over. This is worst case scenario for the Leafs and Colorado having the Sens first is a very real possibility.
Take the picks I guess, and spend that money somewhere else, but it would be a disaster for the Leafs to lose him for this little.

Its counted on 5yr term so 8x7=56.. 56/5=11.2 which is 4 1sts.. and I agree that it would hurt as ****..

Gotcha. So hopefully they offer a 7 year deal at 8 per rather than a 5 year deal at 8per.
Hopefully we can just get this deal done soon, at a Pasternak range. 6.25-6.75 would be okay with me. I’ll absolutely take 4 1sts for him, but if he decides to sign a 5 year deal at 8 per, we’d almost he forced to let him walk.

I don;'t think you understand. Regardless of how long Nylander signs as long as it is over 5 years, The league pretends that the length is 5 years, and calculates that way.
EX: Signs 5@8 = 5*8/5 = 8 mil aav for compensation purposes only. Actual aav is 8 mil.
6@8 = 6*8/5 = 9.6 mil aav for compensation purposes only. Actual aav is 8 mil.
7@8 = 7*8/5 = 11.2 mil aav for compensation purposes only. Actual aav is 8 mil.

Edit: Wait never mind I read your comment wrong..... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
