Yeah I doubt it as well, I think the leafs need for a RHD is at the point of emergency, but a 94 point guy that’s 7 years younger is just so hard to part with. Just wanted to add a little bit to make me feel better haha

I agree. But Gards > Zeitzev and there’s no money retained for Manson, which is why the Canes trade looks more lucritive.

Pretty sure the Pens did it. Their number one Dman for ice time was Ron Hainsey for the last cup win. Panarin can be our Kessel, plus I still like Reilly more than Schultz.

Gotcha. So hopefully they offer a 7 year deal at 8 per rather than a 5 year deal at 8per.
Hopefully we can just get this deal done soon, at a Pasternak range. 6.25-6.75 would be okay with me. I’ll absolutely take 4 1sts for him, but if he decides to sign a 5 year deal at 8 per, we’d almost he forced to let him walk.

8 mil per would only be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The price of 8 mil per would completely **** us (Leafs) over. This is worst case scenario for the Leafs and Colorado having the Sens first is a very real possibility.
Take the picks I guess, and spend that money somewhere else, but it would be a disaster for the Leafs to lose him for this little.

Jesus, obviously he’s not in the opening day line up, but that would be the lineup when he’s back. I would happily take Shea Weber for 4 mil a season, I’d still be happy 7 years from now when he’s 40 on the bottom pairing at 4 mil.

So you’ll pay 8 million for the next 8 years to finish in mediocrity? If he’s healthy half the year and Price is Price again.. we’ll yoire still way better then Ottawa at least.
At least this way you essentially pay Zeitzev 8 mil a year, and get a Dman whose 6 years younger. Plus some valuable assets. Kapanen is unreal, and is gonna be a star, might be the best forward in your squad in year one.

Then have fun drafting around 7-12 the next few years. Without Weber, you’re a guaranteed lotto team, with him for half a season, you’re drafting in middle of the non playoff teams.
We had to trade Kessel, not for the return, but it gave us Mathews instead of Alex Nylander. I mean Sergchev was around then too, but all you end up getting for him is Drouin and a spit in the face.

Marleau didn’t sign as a free agent in Toronto and leave a team and city he was with for 2 decades.. to waive his NMC to go back to San Jose. You don’t just sign hall of fame players to 3 year deals and ditch them after the first season for absolutely no reason.
He had a great season last year, he’ll be great this year, he’s earned his NMC and he isn’t going anywhere for this season or the next and I’m thrilled about it.

Washington actually did something like that once. They had a 400lb goalie in practice once, it was in the early 2000’s and he had a heart attack. I’m seriously not making this up.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goldendelicious</b></div><div>No they should not be a lock to play in 2026 just because its in NA (if that were the case). This is the same tactic that resulted in the 2006 catastrophe in picking players based on what they had done in the past and not what they were presently providing. If they are still elite players come that time then yes. But if not, then they should be avoided.</div></div>
Well 2006 was a disaster because they took a big old physical team to a tournament on international ice. I’m sure Bertuzzi would have been at least a bit better on small ice.
I mean, I love guys like Draper, Doan and Ryan Smyth.. but the biggest mistake in making that team was to leave Crosby off of it. Hopefully we never make that mistake again, play that man until he’s dead! Lol
So basically I’m in complete agreement with your post, with the exception of Doughty and Crosby.. 35+ year old Crosby > 35+ year old Draper.

I think the 35+ year olds like Sid and Doughty all depend on where the Olympics are held. They should be a lock if it’s North American ice, if it’s the big ice then it could be different. With the way Sid trains tho, I just don’t see him slowing down anytime in the next decade or so.

What would it take to get Pietrangelo??
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>A_K</b></div><div>To answer your question, no, there is virtually no possibility that Pietrangelo is moved this summer. The Blues addressed their needs at forward and are pretty confident with their current top 4 on defense. They're not going to trade the captain just because the Leafs need a right-shot defenseman. I would think the only realistic move left for the Blues to make would be to add a depth defenseman at the trade deadline if they're still in the playoff picture.</div></div>
Yeah I’m guessing that’s the case too. Maybe at the deadline if the season goes South again for St. Louis. I like the additions of O’Reily and Bozak, but the loss of Stastny, it could very well be the same story. I guess we’ll see how it all works out with injuries this year. Could be a buyer or a seller at the deadline, the West is so wide open.

Trade with St. Louis
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Davisoc</b></div><div>Take out Sandin and Kap, leave the 1st and get rid of the retention. Toronto isn't shy putting aging vets in the A, we can deal with Steens cap. I understand what you're saying on value but Nylander has the ceiling to be a top 10 right wing in the league and still has center potential. The value for a number one RHD is higher than Nylander which I agree, but man that was an over payment. (In my opinion)</div></div>
I agree. The cheaper we can get Pietrangelo the better.. obviously lol
I’m just saying that if that is the asking price, I would still pull the trigger. A guy who can play 25+ mins a night of absolute top notch hockey is better to me than Kapanen/prospects. I very much value the potential of prospects, but I consider Alex to be a top 5 D man in the NHL and that’s just so hard to find. I also like Connor Brown more than Kapanen, even If it’s the red head/leprechaun under dog story, just love the way he works and the way he plays. Having him on the 4th line is stupid to me.
If we can pull off a deal without taking Steen, and keeping Kapanen tho, well then yes, absolutely.
But I think the only way the Blues part ways with their captain is if we can give them a little wiggle room towards the cap this season... and there’s not that many options.

Trade with St. Louis
Basically Steen is a part of the trade to help St Louis with their current cap issues but they would still have to take part of his salary to help us next year. This year the Leafs cap isn’t really an issue, it’s next year where it’ll be tight. But this team depending on a few signings would be at least close.. if we have to find a way to get rid of Steen next summer or let Myers walk, it’ll be no issue at all.
I’m sure he would wave to come to Toronto if they asked him to. We would re sign Pietrangelo, because after his contract is up, our cap wouldn’t be as much of an issue because we have some players like Marleau coming off the books and the cap should keep rising.
Need to give up a lot for a player like Pietrangelo, but to have a guy who finished top 10 in Norris voting, while being injured, a huge guy in Babs team Canada teams, leader, right handed and all that comes with him..is worth it.

Not adding a 13th forward or another defensemen is EXACTLY WHY IT DOESN'T WORK, you ******* dolt.</div></div>
Lmao, buddy, read what I ******* said.
It’s close enough becaause half on the contracts are just rough estimates. So is the cap at 81 mil in 2019-20. If he’s short by 2 or 3 league minimum players then I’m sure Dubas can figure it out. We’re talking about like 1.5 mil.
Maybe the cap will be 82.5 mil next year? With JT jerseys, a competitive Leafs team, revenues should be up. I mean it’s went up 40.5 million in 13 years, which averages more then 3 mil per season. Problem solved.
Maybe Marner doesn’t make 8.5, maybe AM doesn’t make 11, maybe Nylander doesn’t make 7 and maybe Kapanen doesn’t make 2.1. I mean Brown signed for 2.1 and he scored 20 goals as a rookie, Kapanen has 10 points in his career.
Maybe an expensive player goes on LTIR and is replaced with a cheap forward? Who knows it’s all guessing and estimates. Maybe those forwards sign for even more, then we might have to ditch Gards or Kap, but we don’t know because we’re just ******* GUESSING.
I’m just saying, we don’t know what the cap is going to be next year and we have no idea what these guys are going to sign for. Maybe there’s some bridge deals in there or some hometown discounts, but that’s a completely different argument. But to roughly estimate everything and have it fit without a couple league minimum press box guys is ******* close enough. Idiot.

Well he’s a couple guys short but I’m sure it’ll still work. With the biggest hockey market being one of the major front runners to win a championship, a long playoff drive... hell, just in Johnny T jerseys alone, I’m guessing the cap could be up a good chunk in the years to come.
But to say this doesn’t work cause he didn’t add a 13th forward and plug in defenceman is stupid. There’s injuries and such as well, numbers are just all estimates.
Looks close enough and good enough for me.

Who still thinks matthews will get 11 million +
Kuch has already signed a cheap 3 year bridge contract. Then in the final 2 years of that contract, he’s absolutely destroyed the NHL and been in conversation for the Hart trophy.
McDavid has won the Hart trophy, a couple of Art Ross trophy’s and after he signed his massive contract, look how that worked out with the Oilers. Not good.
Mathews is going into his 3rd year, never came close to a Hart or an Art Ross..he’s also an RFA unlike Tavares.
The whole tax garbage is a fair argument, but I’m sure the sponsorships Auston Mathews can and will get, playing in the biggest hockey market on planet Earth can make up for that plus some.
With all that being said, I think AM will be in the convo for the Hart for many years to come, if he actually played on the top PP and got the ice time while staying healthy, his numbers would be incredible. They WILL be incredible.
Sign him now before any of this happens.
I’m guessing 80mil/8years.

Why would we give up a young 30 goal scorer at 4.5 per?
Dumba is good offensively, but just an absolute disaster is his own end. I’d take Dermott straight up at the sane price over him. Give up a young D man for a young D man but lose a young superstar with a great contract? Awful
Trade a winger for a D man. Huck in some picks or prospects, got tons of those and get someone who can play defence. Like Trouba or Pesce.
I doubt the Jets would part ways with him, but it’s kinda been a mess between him and the team the past few years.

If Montreal want a cup a day
Well the Weber trade is awful. Can’t move 2 D men for an injured one... but I would love the Leafs to trade for him.
Yoi wouldn’t have to retain any of his salary, his big pay years are finished. He’s owed 30 mil for the next 8 years, so he’s only a 3.75 per cap hit if he’s traded.
So without the Habs having the retain any of his salary, the price has to come down.
Unless you wanna have an injured 8 mil per cap hit for the next decade, not to mention that him playing half a season makes you draft around 10th instead of the top 3 again.
We moved Kessel knowing the pens would win a cup, return wasn’t great and we retained salary. He was healthy and in his prime. But that was the difference from drafting Auston Mathews or Logan Brown.
