Trade with St. Louis

Created by: Drunkley
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 27, 2018
Published: Jul. 27, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Resign AM to 11 per. next year.. Marner at 7
Cap should go up around 3mil
Resign Johnsson to 1.25, let Hainsey walk and replace him with Timmy.
Fill in the 4th line with whatever cheap propects, with the money retained with Steen, should be able to keep this team under cap next year, depending on what Myers gets.
If we can’t, we move Steen or let Myers walk/trade at deadline.
Just rough estimations, but man would Alex look great beside Morgan!
The year after next, cap will go up again, Marleau will be gone, will have the space to lock up Pietrangelo.

?????? First Steen has NMC. The Leafs in effect are giving Nylander and all those futures for two year of Pietrangelo, and if tradable three years of a declining Steen. Oh, the cap really doesn't; work if you want/need no Performance Bonues carryover into 2019/20.

Basically Steen is a part of the trade to help St Louis with their current cap issues but they would still have to take part of his salary to help us next year. This year the Leafs cap isn’t really an issue, it’s next year where it’ll be tight. But this team depending on a few signings would be at least close.. if we have to find a way to get rid of Steen next summer or let Myers walk, it’ll be no issue at all.
I’m sure he would wave to come to Toronto if they asked him to. We would re sign Pietrangelo, because after his contract is up, our cap wouldn’t be as much of an issue because we have some players like Marleau coming off the books and the cap should keep rising.
Need to give up a lot for a player like Pietrangelo, but to have a guy who finished top 10 in Norris voting, while being injured, a huge guy in Babs team Canada teams, leader, right handed and all that comes with him..is worth it.

Take out Sandin and Kap, leave the 1st and get rid of the retention. Toronto isn't shy putting aging vets in the A, we can deal with Steens cap. I understand what you're saying on value but Nylander has the ceiling to be a top 10 right wing in the league and still has center potential. The value for a number one RHD is higher than Nylander which I agree, but man that was an over payment. (In my opinion)

P.S. I LOVE the Winnipeg trade. It fits both teams very well.

I agree. The cheaper we can get Pietrangelo the better.. obviously lol
I’m just saying that if that is the asking price, I would still pull the trigger. A guy who can play 25+ mins a night of absolute top notch hockey is better to me than Kapanen/prospects. I very much value the potential of prospects, but I consider Alex to be a top 5 D man in the NHL and that’s just so hard to find. I also like Connor Brown more than Kapanen, even If it’s the red head/leprechaun under dog story, just love the way he works and the way he plays. Having him on the 4th line is stupid to me.
If we can pull off a deal without taking Steen, and keeping Kapanen tho, well then yes, absolutely.
But I think the only way the Blues part ways with their captain is if we can give them a little wiggle room towards the cap this season... and there’s not that many options.

I wonder if we could talk them into giving up big Jay for his final season, get that hit off the books and use it for a big push. Give us the wiggle room we need to say bye to Jake and have depth on that left side.

Legit worst trade I've ever seen though.

Maybe we're both right.

Steen can waive it. I have a feeling if he were to go anywhere it would his old team. Also no deal on this. We have no need for Nylander although I do like him. We don't have the greatest D to replace him therefore I would say no. The deal is a little ways out you have to give us younger and I don't see this deal making sense for the Blues. It makes us worse off.
