Hypothetical Nylander on a bridge deal.

Description
I know both parties have expressed a desire to sign long term BUT I don't think it makes sense based on next year's cap situation. In 2020 when Marleau is off the books they can reallocate that money and sign him to a 6 year $48 mil contract making the total value of the contract a 8 year $58 mil deal. This is just a thought. I would still prefer a long term deal but it might not work out.

Honestly not a bad idea. I know it would likely be cheaper overall on a long term deal now but a 2 year bridge deal is likely the best chance to keep everyone together. With Marleau off the books, it'll give you more flexibility in payment to Nylander and with Nylander at a lower caphit for next season you'd have a better chance at keeping Gardiner.

Would he get that much on a 2 year bridge??? Mantha just got 2x3.3. But I suppose Panarin got 2x6, but that's a different situation I suppose, seeing as he got to become a free agent after that deal

Exactly, its not worth the risk. Nylander can easily perform into an 8-9mill aav player. Its not worth it. Offer him Pastrnak money and call it a day. They're good friends, just do it already.

If you can get Nylander for $7 or under, Marner for $8 or Under and Matthews for $11 or under I would 100% want them to go this route. If you are thinking about the future though in 2020 they will have a lot more cap space than in 2019. Even if he explodes he will probably not command more money then Draisatil which I would be more comfortable paying him in 2020 when the cap could be as high as $85 mil. So even if my 6 year $48 mil proposal is low it should be in the range to sign him. It just makes all of these extensions easier. Not just the big guns but Johnsson & Kapanen too. heck this extra $2 mil saved could be the difference between keeping Carrick if he breaks out this year or losing him for nothing. As much as I dislike the uncertainty for the future this truly makes the most sense based on where the cap hit stands next year.

Let's assume that next year as RFA's Matthews signs for $11, Marner for $7.5, Johnsson and Kapanen sign for $2.5 each. That means that in the 2020/21 season you will have $57 mil committed to 10 players plus Kessel's money. If the cap is $85 mil you have around $28 mil to resign RFA's Dermott ($4.5 mil) Brown ($3 mil unless he gets Wilson Money then just let him walk) Grundtrom ($2.5???) Sparks ($2.5???) and Nylander ($8.5 MAX). You have your Core locked in and hopefully by this time Liljegren and Ozhiganov have made an impact with the team. Need rookies to fill in the gaps on D.

Plan A ( for ppl claiming D is fine, which might actually even work out ) : https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/843301
Plan B ( for us that think youngsters might not prove NHL material that fast ) : https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/844057
