Maple Leafs 2019
I know this sounds crazy but i would be on board for this. I wouldn't want to sign Ferland though, keep Hyman and save yourself $2 mil per year. Try to do the Calgary deal with someone else. You're going to need all the money you can get to sign Hall to an extension. Defense is much much better and the team is more complete. I do love Marner though but this or an offer sheet are the only ways I would want to see him go. You basically kill three birds with one stone:
1) Find a scoring equivalent to replace Marner's production - Check
2) Upgrade the Blue Line - Check
3) Rid yourself of Zaitsev's contract - Check
Question is, would NJ want to make the trade?

You think it would cost Kapanen, Sandin and a 2nd for Nurse? I'm just going off an article around the deadline. If it was that much I wouldn't want him personally. I didn't realize he was an all star defender.

Leafs trade w Vegas Philly
Even if this wasn't an overpayment, Vegas is looking to move Miller to Shed salary. He would still be like the 4th best defense man on this team but it would cost ELC assets. A 3-Way trade might make the most sense.

TML 2019 only way out Pt 1
The main thing I disagree with really is trading Gardiner. I'm not a huge fan of his but teams in the playoff hunt rarely, if ever, trade UFA's. I would have loved to see the return the Leafs could have got for JVR last year or Gardiner this year but the fact of the matter is you 1) Don't want to help your competition get better and 2) The return you would need would have to be a roster player with term, which the receiving team would not want to give up.
I'm not too bummed about the Matthews contract because it seems okay for both sides. My only concern is the implications for Marner as has been pointed out by several.

This. If the Sabres came at the Leafs with this they should accept. Nylander has a lot more potential in my mind. AHL numbers don't mean that much without context. I mean Chris Mueller has 227 points in the last 4 years (251 games) that doesn't mean he'd be a major contributor to the Leafs.

Personally I wouldn't count Tavares as a London Knight because he was a deadline acquisition. That goaltending is pretty bad. Maybe they could convince Steve Mason to come out and play and then Rick Nash could come out of retirement and play too.
For real can any other Junior team do this? This doesn't include guys like Tyler Parsons, Evan Bouchard or Liam Foody who should be part of that next wave too.

Kadri to CBJ and Murphy from CHI
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jonesryan</b></div><div>I'm not saying that he's not good. I've liked him since his junior days. It's just adding another right handed shooting winger when Toronto is loaded with those kinds of players. If it's a winger they're looking it, it should be a left handed one. They only have Johnsson, Marleau and Moore there that are NHL ready. Unless Toronto was gonna move 1 of Kapanen, Marner, Bracco or maybe a Nylander, there really isn't a need for another winger like Anderson. At least not for Kadri, use Kadri's high trade value to get the dman they need. Especially with Anderson's contract expiring soon and all of Toronto's other RFA's and UFA's coming up at the same time, it'd turn into a rental situation almost. That's not really the best or ideal trade value for a guy like Kadri</div></div>
I think the thought here would be that Nylander would replace Kadri as the 3rd line Center. So that would open up a spot for Anderson to play as a right winger even with Marner, Kapanen & Bracco. I'm not saying I agree with it but that could work. To me I prefer the value of a 3rd line C with a $4.5 Mil contract compared to a 3rd line C with a $6.9 Mil contract, but Anderson is good, In a perfect world Toronto would only have to trade Zaitsev & Brown.

Kadri Brown on the block - make an offer
I think one thing that can't be underestimated is how much Kadri means to the team. I think trading him would be a tough sell to the locker room more than anything. It makes more sense to clear room by trading Zaitsev & Brown and replacing them with players making money near the league minimum. I understand that a 3rd line centre making $4.5 Mil per year is a luxury the Leafs can't really afford but Kadri should be the last option.

Also the value of Kadri is he is a solid player on a great contract. If the Canes eat $1.75 mil that makes Kadri a $6.25 mil centre. They are already overpaying Jordan Stall who provides similar attributes as Kadri. I don't think Kadri and a 3rd gets you Hamilton to begin with let alone eating a large portion of his contract.

I'd rather keep Nylander and not spend $4+ mil on Ferland. Nylander plus a 1st is very short sighted for 1 year of Faulk. I'd rather offer less tern/money and make the money work that way.
Also I would have to think Ennis can get more money elsewhere.

The main criticism now of this post was the term, which once accounted for says that AM is overpaid, and that if these 10 numbers are true about Marner, that he will be badly overpaid.
As I said. I have been DOWN that road, I'm just hoping I'm right at this point, but preparing for 6@10</div></div>
Seems slightly dated now as Marner has gone off the charts and is a top scorer in the league. I would say he is comparable to Johnny Hockey to be honest. If he could get the same cap % as him on a 5 or 6 year deal I would be happy.
Very thorough and informative though. Thanks for sharing that.

He got 11.33% of cap hit in 2017/18 season. Marner would be getting 9.5-10 in that percentage. Draisaitl got 8yr deal. Marner would get 6, because thats a new trend. A wise trend. I would expect 9-10 range for Marner on 6yr deal. Above 10 if more yrs.</div></div>
Is the assumption not that Centers are more valuable than wingers? The real test will be to see what Rantanen gets.

I think the thinking in the hockey world is that Matthews would have got $14 on an 8 year deal and took the hit on a 5. Marner would get $10-$11 on an 8 so his value should be around $8 in a 5.

I would be happy with either Braun or Larsson. If they were a replacement for Zaitsev I would be very happy. At least they can play on the top line.

I think using cap % is a much better way to look at the comps. Drai signed for 8.5m AAV and it was 11.3% of the cap. If Marner signed the same deal this summer, it would be around 9.4m. I think that's where the baseline is if you're talking about an 8-yr deal. My guess is 9.4m - 9.8m on an 8-yr deal, maybe 8.25-8.75 on something a little shorter, if that's what he wants.</div></div>

Most of those wingers signed their contracts when the cap was much lower. I agree, i don't find Marner more valuable than Ovechkin or Kucherov or Kane. He has youth but those guyys all earned those contract whereas Marner is still earning his. But this is like saying that Matthews shouldn't have signed for more than $8.7 Mil because that's what Crosby gets. Different time, and Crosby took a huge discount.

Hopefully they get him for less. I don't think he's an $11 mil player but I think He and his people do. So if I were to make adjustments to this it would be what?
Marner at $10.450 (Save $500k)
Brown Gone and Bracco Up (Save $1.26M)
Marchement Up and Engvall Gone (Save $157k)
That's $2M roughly saved. The issue is if you trade Zaitsev (which might be more difficult than Brown) you have to replace him with a rookie, unless you can get a less bad cap hit back. And no one can count on someone to retire. With the facts as we have them now, this is going to be tough. Not impossible though.
