2019-20 Cap Trouble No Trades

Created by: superbrett
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 26, 2019
Published: Feb. 27, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The team looks like it is in trouble. the problem with trading Zaitsev is they need to replace him with someone. Same with Brown. I get that they would save roughly $5 mil from replacing them with league average contracts but the team is already in trouble losing Hainsey , Ennis & Gardiner in the off season. You don't want too many rookies. Ideally they need to find another Ennis but the defensive equivilant next year.

Yes but his cap hit can be traded. I've changed my mind since December. Due to Marleau's ineffective play, I think he retires. Don't think the Leafs would have made the Muzzin deal without knowing Marleau is retiring. We'll see.

That makes total sense. I just hope they win the Stanley Cup because that all but seals it.

When has a full out "signed his papers" retired player ever been traded?

It's over $1.25M in savings, that's going to be pretty useful no matter what happens. Bracco is having a better season (statistically) than Moore in the AHL this year, and he's 2 years younger. He's ready to graduate.

IMO, one way or the other, Bracco is an NHLer next year.

Yeah, I just hate using a top 9 guy on the 4th line. I think Moore is more the 4th line type. I agree that money could be better used elsewhere but it's the Zaitsev contract that is hindering the Leafs.

Is it possible to trade Marleau to the Yotes. Then have the Yotes trade him right back and retain half his salary? incetivise them with a pick. for example trade Marleau for a 7th. Then trade him back for a 3rd with half his salary retained. Kind of a strange idea, but possible none the less?

League wouldn't allow it. They didn't like the Orpik move last summer, and this is worse.

Did Datsyuk not retire from the NHL? He went to the KHL right?

That's the 5% chance. They could trade him after July 1st (his bonus get's paid) if he wants to retire.

he was traded to the yotes before he officially retired. everyone knew he was going to tho. so for example trade marleau on july 1 and he can retire july 2.

Yeah personally I just can't see how any agent or anyone argues that Marner get more than Kucherov's 9.5 and don't anyone start talking to me about all that state tax bs. Biz does enough of that.

The new comparable will be Mark Stone's $9.5M... Marner will get at least $9.5 and the ask will probably be higher since he views himself closer to Matthews.

Just because Mark Stone is overpaid doesn't mean Marner needs to be. Similar but opposite to the Pastrnak Willy agrument of a few months ago, just because Pasta is underpaid doesn't mean Willy should be too.

Well, I've been pondering moving Kadri for Pesce type deal for awhile.

Then Bracco (who's an amazing playmaker) gets to play with close friend Matthews (best goal scoring C in the league).

Which allows best friends Nylander (at C) play with Kappy and terrorize 3rd lines/pairs for the foreseeable future.

This would be my preference as opposed to dealing Nylander (I'm in the minority on this one).

the Only way Marner gets 9-10 only, he is taking a hometown discount. He is a 11 million dollar player at min

Yotes don’t want to do that and it is cap circumvention and not allowed. Have to wait a year.

Marleau would need to retire. I’m not positive as to whether we can pay him his bonus on July 1st and then have him retire as incentive.

Lol at min. So he's gotta be paid top 5 in the league at min? 11 is absolute max, not min there pal. look up how many players in the league make 11 or more and get back to me tears of joy

I agree that the Leafs should keep Nylander. The problem with offensive players is they are streaky. With the big 4 all there you have great odds that at least one of them will be hot. Lately that seems to by Nylander. This will be extrapolated in the offseason.

We'd have to find a way to keep Rielly's bf Gardiner if we want to compete for the Friendship Cup. wink

Marleau’s contract can be traded after he retires with no cba issues and would cost a team zero dollars. He may also be traded and then retire. I find it much more convincing that he retires first and then his contract is traded.

I felt the close to $11 mil contract was pretty good. Obviously I hope he signs for less for the sake of the team but he'll get paid well.

I do not think that Stone is overpaid. I do however think that Kucherov is underpaid. I think if Dubas signs Marner under $9.5M, he did very well. Contracts are just going up and things will calm down again after the next lockout and the new CBA will protects GMs from themselves again.

One of the six defensemen on the NHL's number one defense, with a cap hit of only $1.45M for several more years.

11 ties him for 3rd highest paid player in the league, that just simply is not happening.

Theres also only 5 wingers in the entire league making over 8.5 next year... and only one over 10 and thats Kane. You simply can not Justify paying Marner over 10.5, even 10.5 is ridiculous. its gotta be 8.5 - 9.5
