2019-20 Cap Trouble No Trades
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Barilko14</b></div><div>Well, I've been pondering moving Kadri for Pesce type deal for awhile.
Then Bracco (who's an amazing playmaker) gets to play with close friend Matthews (best goal scoring C in the league).
Which allows best friends Nylander (at C) play with Kappy and terrorize 3rd lines/pairs for the foreseeable future.
This would be my preference as opposed to dealing Nylander (I'm in the minority on this one).</div></div>
I agree that the Leafs should keep Nylander. The problem with offensive players is they are streaky. With the big 4 all there you have great odds that at least one of them will be hot. Lately that seems to by Nylander. This will be extrapolated in the offseason.

IMO, one way or the other, Bracco is an NHLer next year.</div></div>
Yeah, I just hate using a top 9 guy on the 4th line. I think Moore is more the 4th line type. I agree that money could be better used elsewhere but it's the Zaitsev contract that is hindering the Leafs.

That makes total sense. I just hope they win the Stanley Cup because that all but seals it.

I agree about Zaitsev, but the difference between Brown's contract and Bracco's isn't enough to make me in a rush to trade him. Unless they absolutely have to. Of course if they could use him as part of a package to get an NHL ready ELC RHD then see ya Brownsie.

Kucherov cost himself money by signing so early. But honestly I think the state tax has to play a part in it. You think LeBron and Chris Bosh created the super team in Miami because they had the best bench? It was because they could take less and make the same. Seguin, Kucherov and now Stone all benefit from this, but not as much as the teams do. Hopefully it gets balanced out by endorsement deals which I imagine are more lucrative in a market like Toronto but those aren't guarantees.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Yes, you have accurately analyzed the problem. Good job! However, if you're about a million high on Marner (as we all hope), then trading Zaitsev away for futures or an entry-level forward and bringing up Liljegren is likely to solve the problem.
And because I can't refrain from pointing out how incandescently brilliant I am, trading Kapanen, Zaitsev, a second, third and fourth for Scott Mayfield and the Islanders' first not only solves the financial problem but also improves the defense.</div></div>
Ideally Liljigren is on the Leafs roster making an excellent contribution at a steal of a cost but no one can count on that. Defensemen take time to develop. Also again, this is a contending team. I hope that the vets strength outweighs the rookies weakness' but a bird in hand is better than two in the bush. On a team like this you can't afford to roll out with 4 or 5 rookies.

Moore is replacing Ennis. Bracco could be good but again, I worry that too many rookies on a contending team isn't a good thing. I don't think the NEED to move Brown. To me he's a good player on a great contract and he want's to be here. The contract that NEEDS to be moved in order for everything to work is Zaitsev. Marner might get less then $10M and I hope he does but the stuff his family and agent have been saying scares me. In a perfect world he's making $9 mil and we trade Zaitsev and we are set. The defense is where I fear the loss in quality the most.

I should specify that I think there is a reason that Holl, Gauthier, Moore and Rosen were all signed to the contracts below the ELC amount. they save around $825K having those guys on the roster. Engvall will probably be replaced with someone below the $925k mark too.

Leafs are CAP Screwed
I think they are cap screwed if they can't find buyers for Zaitsev and Brown (I don't think Brown will be an issue). I would say that Marner signs for more unless he gets less than 6 years but both Kap and Johnsson sign for less in my opinion. And yeah, it would be ridiculous to sign Jordie Benn when Rosen can probably add similar play for half the price. The team still needs a better defenseman for the top pairing but it makes no sense to sign Myers to an expensive contract.

They are in a cap crunch if your plan involves them shedding over $12 mil while only taking on $5.4 mil. Also I agree with most here. These guys will make more in arbitration even on a bridge deal.

One thing to remember too is that Florida and Vegas don't have a state income tax. So these in reality he could make $12 mil a season and still make less take home than Stone and Kucherov.

I assume that Nevada has no state tax like Texas and Florida. These teams should be penalized. They are able to sign these players to less money cap wise because the players actually make more money. Seguin, Kucherov and now Stone. Other teams don't have this luxury.

next year
I think at this point I would rather have Rosen play than Hainsey. Hainsey was great for what he was but he's lost a step and I'd rather see what Rosen can do on the 3rd pairing ans spend that $1.5 mil elsewhere. If Girardi would come here for $1.5 I would love to have him on the 3rd pair too but that 2nd D-line needs some work. Marner might get that cap hit over 5 years, and I feel that Johnsson and Kapenen are a little on the low end unless it's on a 1 year deal. They just have to get over this hump and then they are in a better cap position next year.

A few issues. Cap might not be that high and your plan depends on it. Kapanen and Johnsson sign for more and at a longer term. And that trade is not getting Hamilton. They are going to want NHL assets for him.

Deadline option 1
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Caniac2000</b></div><div>Erm... I highly doubt that. Marner is arguably the most important forward the leafs have. He was expected to get maybe 8-9 before the season started, and now he's having the best year of his career. This is an Aho-esk situation. Marner will get more then 10. Hands down not a question. Ferland allows Toronto to have that grit while not deducting any skill, Kapanen doesn't make the 5/6 mil he's gonna soon, instead ferland should get something like a 3x3 or 4x4 type deal, and thats much more manageable. Leafs fans are so stuck on Kapanen, they seem to forget how many cheaper alternatives there will be</div></div>
I thought Ferland wanted Wilson money? Also what are the rumors about Aho and his contract. I live in Leaf land so I only ever see that Mitch Marner will be the highest paid winger in the history of the NHL. For that matter what will Rantannen get? If I were either of those guys I'd be looking at the Marner contract very closely.

This means we would now have to start looking at moving a core piece like nylander. I think if zaitsev and brown are moved it is to make space. Trading zaitsev and brown and taking on a young Dman on an elc who can play bottom pair would solve our cap problem. Even if Marleau retires his cap hot stays on the team. Hence why guys like Pavel Datsyuk got traded to a team trying to hit the cap floor.

I've been saying this for months. To me it makes perfect sense. I would say a 2nd for a 7th is an over payment. If the Sens are worried about paying someone $800k who won't be there for 2 years trade a contract back that's under $1 mil.

There's one of those every year. At least. Last year Tatar, Kane (UFA) Statsny (UFA), Nash (UFA), Brassard were all traded in deals with 1st round picks. McDonagh too but that was an elite player being moved. People overpay at the deadline. I would say that maybe Statsny and Kane were the only ones who deserved the 1st round pick. At the start of the year I would have thought he'd go for a 2nd or 3rd like Boyle and Plekanic did in the past but he's having a career year and some GM will overpay. Heck Martin Hanzel was traded for a 1st in 2017 and that guy has never scored more points than Dzingel has right now.
