don't know. how this solves the cap at all. karlsson and Matthews make about the same starting next year. leafs don't a cap issue this year or even next year. the issue is playing value for those three players

Karlsson will probably want what Doughty got.. 11million nothing less.

And I doubt that Toronto would ever trade Matthews.

It is kind of helping the cap by managing the cap by balancing the forwards and defense. Instead of having a stacked offence with no defense now there's a good mixture of both.

11th overall in goals against... I see no need to panic.

That was last year but in 2019 we only got Reilly, Dermott, Zaitzev, and some young guys...

I'll entertain ideas that are farther out than most can handle, but I LOLed

I'd rather dig up the old Arizona deal of OEL + Domi + 2016 1st (Clayton Keller).

Even if you knew the Leafs would be better in this deal, Ottawa is so crazy right now I couldn't entertain a deal. The last thing I would want is Matthews hearing a rumor about a trade that never happens because Melnyk intervened

Signing Tavares didn't make Matthews replaceable either, they're a great one-two and provide balance in age.
But it did make Marleau/Marner/Nylander only as valuable as they can be playing the wing. So far it seems like everyone from fans, to coaches, to management is pushing Nylander into the category of spare parts so a deal around Nylander for Karlsson is much more likely to be accepted

Not panic, but it should be a priority to make cap room on D for anyone that becomes available and to add more bodies to the prospect pipeline (Anaheim has some of the best young D, and they aren't playing in the NHL until 22-24, so draft + 5 years is a long lead time compared to forwards)
