Description
So u saw this on TSN. The idea is that Hainsey was fine with all his Ice time until game 70 when he ran out of gas. The thought is that each centre plays 20 mins a game and Kadri controls the 3rd and 4th line duty up front.

Defensively like I said, Hainsey ran out of gas last year because he was out only left handed penalty killer. What is Marincin good at? Killing penalty’s! So we run 7 d-men a game with Marincin getting his ice time on the PK. It’s unorthodox but it might work. While we r waiting for all our defenceman in the minors it’s time to try anything. Let me know what u guys think!

Also the Nylander contract was random and just me thinking of a way to has everyone on the roster.

Nope, all kinds of nopes. While I agree Marincin is a great penalty killer, he hasn't shown that he can do much else. If anything I would just make sure the team plays with enough discipline so they don't have to kill many penalties. Also I think Carrick moving next to Rielly with Hainsey playing with or trading Garinder for something and then moving Dermott up to the 2nd pairing the Hainsey to the left side of the 3rd pair. Carrick doesn't get enough credit and hasn't been given a fair chance from Babs.

Unless Marincin outshines everyone in the preseason, he's not going to make the team.

I feel the same way about Gardiner. I did lost one before where it was Him for Tyler Myers 1 for 1. Both guys can’t be kept by there current team beyond this year and both fill needs of ours (Leafs and Jets). I think this is something to consider but it would be last resort. Again, I saw it on TSN, not my first idea

Yeah I have heard all these ideas as well. Personally I would jump at the Gardiner for Myers trade. It really does help both teams. The Jets need a lefty who can move the puck while the leafs could use a righty.

I don’t see why both teams haven’t at least discussed the idea. Myers could play with Morgan. Hainsey with Nikita. Dermott with who ever

I think Dermott could move up to play with Zaitsev and move Hainsey to the left side of the 3rd pair to play with Carrick or whoever wins that spot.

I’m not 100% on Dermott being a top 4 guy yet. Maybe that’s why they haven’t traded Gardiner. They want to give Dermy another season playing before he gets more time

Fair enough. Eitherway I don't see the defence as a real problem for the team. I think a tighter effort from the forwards would make a huge difference in limiting shots.

Without JVR and Bozak on the team hopefully we r a bit better at back checking. People think our defence is a horendice and won’t get better but it’s all in development. Liljegren next season, Dermott for a full season, Sandin I’m 2 or 3, Dursi looks pretty good. It’s all in the a year or 2

Its good enough now. Those other guys will eventually make the club, hopefully, but the current group isn't terrible. They aren't elite but they aren't terrible. The idea that 1 defenceman is going to make a huge difference is silly. Unless that defenceman is named Doughty, or Karlsson, the impact will be rather small. Sure it could be upgraded but at the cost of weakening the overall roster. Pretty much any available right handed Defenceman would cost a lot and come with marginal improvements over the current roster. The biggest impact to team d will come when the forwards do a better job of playing defence in their zone. Too often the wingers are flying up the ice looking for stretch passes. That leaves the points open and then forces the centre out of possition. If you look at a lot of shot metrics for Toronto, that is where they get in trouble. A new defenceman really won't fix that, it has to come from wingers taking the defensive side of things more seriously.

Hainsey played both left side and right side d when killing penalties. Reilly and healthy Zaitsev makes three good PK Dmen. Without Polak....who are the other 2 or 3? I don't think Gardiner and Carrick have shown enough throughout the years to be long term dependable on the PK. Dermot will have to be one, along with one of Borgman and Ozhinikov.

I like this idea so much I would include a second-round pick or one of our extra defense prospects that might partially replace Myers/Gardiner next year when the Jets lose him.

I don't think I'd add anything extra, that's just throwing away assets. I don't think Myers is any more valuable than Gardiner, different yes but not more valuable. So the trade would have to be 1 for 1 or I guess we could throw in a very low prospect just to clear a contract from the 50 limit.

I'm a big believer in insurance. The risks I'm thinking about are (1) Ozhiganov doesn't pan out, (2) Zaitsev doesn't improve on last year's showing, and (3) palhal is right that Carrick isn't really top 4 quality. Myers insures against all of those risks, even collectively.

Fair, but I wouldn't give up extra assets for nothing. I'd rather keep Gardiner and let him walk then sending him and other assets just to watch Myers walk.

Thank you, but this was TSN’s idea. I noticed your name says former NYIfan. Why did u ditch the NYI?

I moved to L.A. and that summer, Wayne Gretzky arrived. It was fascinating to sit behind the opposing team's goal and watch him every second he was on the ice, instead of following the puck around.

I'm a fan of the GAME. I love to watch good teams play. I like my hometown Kings and mighty Ducks and I like the underdogs rising, like Las Vegas and, this year, Toronto. And now that the Isles have lost Tavares, I'm going to start rooting for them again and seeing if Lamoriello can pull them up out of the muck.

Fair enough. Lou has started rebuilding the Isles well and I have confidence in they will be turned around with time.
