Because if you don't pay him, he signs a short term deal and then he's gone. Fairly quickly too if the players manage to lower the RFA age in the new CBA. Which I think is likely.

Furthermore, salary value has little to do with any of that. It's more what you can get. Otherwise there aren't many players in the league right now who can claim to be worth more than 8.7 million.
But go on and tell me how you'd rather have JT than Crosby on your team.

One walks in the room and you are going to win the cup, the other, your a "contender"

Matthews will get more than 11. JT's deal is a floor. Caps gone up 3 years now since McDavids deal? I would be expecting he makes McDavid money, maybe even more. Because that's what happens when you sign a talented young player to a deal and you get the best years of their career. You gonna pay.

Also 11 million would make him one of the highest paid players in the league.

Lmao...matthews hasn't done anything yet and he gets more than tavares. Thank goodness your not a GM every player would be overpaid.

To say Matthews hasn't done anything is such a dumb argument. he's turned this bottom feeder franchise around.
He gave you a number 1 center where you previously had none.
And if he leaves, your franchises hopes and dreams go with it.
He was the best player on this team last year, and he is probably still the best player on this team, and he'll get paid because of it.

So what your saying even though with our cap space available we a offersheet proof just like we were this year so you think the leafs are handing him a blank check? Matthews is a #1 centre but he hasn't had a McDavid like season and when you look at his stat lines he is a Stamkos Tavares type not McDavid. So explain to me how is he worth more than 11 million...oh thats right just because right

Speaking of paying the stars and letting depth go instead of overpaying, the best option if the Leafs want to keep every big core guy is to get rid of Kapanen/Connor Brown. They r good but like u pointed out about depth, these guys are just depth. It might b at this point that they just dont keep Nylander and then the rest works out, but I believe relieving themselves of paying Kapanen/Brown 2-3M would b a big benefit.

Keep them all until one wants too much money.

ok you explain to me how JT is worth more than Crosby or Malkin and I'll be glad to answer that for you. He's not. Period. That's how it works. It's not about getting paid based on what other players make. If so there wouldn't be a player in this league making more than 8.7 million. As over the last 4-5 years there has been no one better over that time span. yet those big money contracts flowed out.
Matthews is gonna make his, period. He's gonna get paid. He's gonna make over 11, he's probably looking at McDavid money. That's what happens when the cap goes up for 3 years or whatever between contracts.

Yes, He will be looking at McDavid money, you always fail to remember the player doesn't get what he asks for. The team (which you never take into account) will be looking for Seguin money, that was just signed a few weeks ago now, are you saying Matthews is over three and a half million dollars better than Seguin, even factoring cap inflation? I'll give you a hint, the answer is no. Tavares is a cap on Matthews aav, 8@11.

Just taging puck into this as it is also his convo.

You know, you have "GM in the making" as your tag line, but every time you open your mouth (figuratively ofc), you prove to the world that you are completely inept on the topic of contracts and you utterly fail to recognize the factors involved in inking one. I know I have tried to explain it to you and I am sure others have too, Yet you persist in your utter failure to understand anything relating to the topic on which you speak, and continue to use the same tired arguments that have been disproved time and time again. I think my question can be summed up as the following: How do you entirely miss the fact that you cherry pick your information that you then use to create your opinions, and when pointed out, begin to argue endlessly with others, utilizing the same points that were just disproved?

my guess is he's getting 12 million. That's my guess. But you never know. He's a 1st over all, he hasn't disappointed, and he turned what was a dumpster fire of a team around. You can argue it all day. He's one of the best young players in the league. he's going to be paid like it. There is nothing but upside here, he's only getting better. He'll get 12 if not more.

You keep yapping at the jaw arrogant as all hell. You'll be hiding when he signs that new contract. He may end up the highest paid player in the league come next year. And NO ONE would be surprised other than you!
