that's what the rangers say.. Eemeli Rasanen is the only one they would be interested in in this deal. Marincin is a 7th defenseman (at 26 and yet to play half an NHL season) and Brown is a bottom 6 forward. If the rangers are giving up shatty and retaining half it'll be much more than that they'll ask for and other teams would pay it too. Yes he's average in the defensive zone but he's still lethal in the offensive zone. Just needs time after that injury last year.

Tampa would give up a haul to get rid of a bad contract while getting back shatty with 3 retained for the remainder of his contract.

Why would the leafs give up anything from Shattenkirk? He's got one of the worst contracts in the league. He never plays a full season and is a defensive liability. NYR would have to give up a draft pick or prospect to get rid of that contract and get nothing in return.

“Shatty” is a bad contract.... brown and rasanan are two good pieces too. Connor brown is a 2nd or third line winger for sure nothing fancy but very smart and hard working. He litrerally makes zero mistakes, that’s why Babs loves him. Admitted though his trade value is low. You’d be better off getting rid of shattenkirk somewhere else but it will cost you if you don’t retain. He is no longer an asset.

this is why ppl don't like toronto fans on here.. they think every player that isn't theirs has 0 value..

if you actually look at statistics (instead of just going with what people say on here) you will actually see that he is an above average player-- just a little bit under that elite tier. The rangers have SUCKED since he's been on them, but he isn't the cause of it.

Career Posession Avgs:
CF% 53.1, CF% rel 2.3 -- what this shows is that his team is better with him on the ice than off of the ice, and that they have possession the majority of the time-- in fact last year on a horrible rangers team was the only year since his rookie year when his CF% was below 50%

His career average for:
Points: .6 ppg , which is dragged down last year and this year on poor rangers teams (he was .5ppg last year, .4 currently but its early)

you argue that he's horrible and "not an asset" meanwhile this is Reilly
career av:
CF% 49.5
Rel CF %: 1 (he's improved the last two years)
.47 ppg (being inflated by this years stats-- highly unlikely he keeps up at this pace)

and you can say toronto was a horrible team his first few years-- but how does that then NOT apply to shattenkirk's "poor" performance last year and so far this year. To say that shattenkirk is "no longer an asset" just shows you know nothing abt hockey outside of your bubble in toronto

You can fight the entire world if you want to but you are over valuing your player. It happens all the time. He is no longer an asset because he is not playing up to his price tag. He is a defensive liability. Lots of teams looking for rhd and next to zero mentions of shattenkirk. Nobody is arguing that he used to put up decent stats. Nobody wants him now. That is why he is not a trade asset. If you like him keep him but don’t expect to move him for a decent return.

The problem is his price tag... 6.65 a year for a defenceman who is not good in his own zone and can run a PP and move some offence. Using your comparison, Reilly makes 5 and can essentially do the same things (though I would argue he's better in his zone than Shatty now.) Most of the stats on Reilly over his short career are from younger years when he probably shouldn't have been in the NHL or as high on the depth chart as he was, because the teams were so bad. Yes I acknowledge Shattenkirk has to deal with a subpar Rangers team last year and a bad one this year, but all the same I think Reilly is the better player to have due to both contract, and the biggest part, age. Reilly is still young and developing (24) where as Shattenkirk is what he is and will likely be in decline over the next years of his contract due to passing 30.

I'm not in disagreement with what is stated here, all i'm saying is when you retain 3 mill and all of a sudden Shatty is making less than 4 million you would get a nice asset back.. is he worth 6.65-- meh it depends, you won't really find a defenseman than makes less (not on ELC). here are the comparables for the last 5 years, just click on points/game to get the right ones https://www.quanthockey.com/nhl/seasons/last-5-nhl-seasons-defensemen-stats.html

The only part i'm arguing is the "not an asset" comment
