Dellandrea and Oettinger were both headscratchers as well. Dellandrea was a projected 2nd rounder and they took him before guys like Smith and Farrabee. He’s a guy with no elite tools, mediocre point totals, and plays on an 0-11 Flint Firebirds team. Drafting a goalie in round 1 is beyond stupid as well. Maybe someday Oettinger becomes a starter, but in the meantime they passed on Frost, Jokiharju, Tolvanen, Kostin, Timmens and others.

Yeah our drafting is awful. Hasn’t been good since 2013.

I really think your expectation of drafting well is a bit inflated don't you?
I mean you are picking who turned out to be the better players from that spot forward but things are 20/20. No one picks 100%.
The first round getting a career NHL player is in the 50% range. You consider the top 5 guys are usually gonna be some of those guys and it drops below that.
The second round is in the lower 20 percent and the 3rd round is a few ticks above 10%.

So you look at that, you got 6 picks and you are keeping two of them so you are already at 33% . It's a bit below par, but not by a ton. It also depends what they got instead which is still on the team. That's gonna put you into the 40 some % range. It's really not horrible. Not great, but no team drafts 100%
