Changes of Scenery for All Involved - EDM and PIT trades

Created by: TheMooterus
Team: 2018-19 Dallas Stars
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 26, 2018
Published: Nov. 26, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Trades
1.
DAL
  1. Sprong, Daniel
Additional Details:
Stars trade away a depth scorer for a depth scorer. Both players are being misused in their current situation, and Dallas is in a spot where Sprong could realistically work his way into the top-6 sooner rather than later.
PIT
  1. Nichushkin, Valeri
Additional Details:
No better way to get Nichushkin's career going than to pair him with one of the best Russians playing the sport. He's got the size, speed, and skating ability. His biggest issue right now is his playmaking ability and hockey IQ. Malkin would work wonders for Nichushkin's development.
2.
DAL
  1. Puljujärvi, Jesse
  2. 2019 3rd round pick (EDM)
Additional Details:
Puljujarvi is currently being pushed further and further down the Oilers depth chart. While Ritchie isn't an offensive presence at all, he could slot into Puljujarvi's 4th line role and provide a good physical, defensive presence.
EDM
  1. Honka, Julius
  2. Ritchie, Brett
  3. 2019 4th round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Honka needs a change of scenery. He is in pretty significant disfavor with the Stars front office. As is the case with Puljujarvi, if Dallas wants any value at all for him, he needs to be moved now.

i'd consider the PIT trade but Stars would have to retain some salary to make it work

Solid moves. I like them. Although I'm not sure whether there's a place for Puljujärvi in Stars roster or not.

His spot is in the minor's to develop for a season not playing 7 min a night on the 3rd or 4th line.

How can you say he’s getting pushed down the depth chart when we have absolute zero depth on either wing. Jesses value is at an all time low. Makes no sense to trade him for pennies on the dollar. He’ll either spend the rest of the season in Bakersfield, but by the sounds of it, Hitch sees him in a consistent top 6 role by the next few weeks.

I think the Pens are looking for a more equal trade. A good comparable would be Donato.
Sprong is a goal scorer. He's shown that at the AHL level already. He's a guy who could put up 30 goals a season when he gets it together. I don't think there is equal value of that on the other end.
On top of it, they really don't need another RW. That's why I like the Donato trade better. Boston gets a guy who could potentially be their 2nd line RW opposite DeBrusk. The penguins get a LW which they need.
Hard to say though. With the lack of production from Rust Sprong is getting an opportunity on the 3rd line. He needs to play through it and figure it out. Learning pains suck but it's for the better. I think next year he will take a good step forward.
