Keep Nylander trade Kadri

Created by: palhal
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 29, 2018
Published: Nov. 29, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
To fit the cap, Leafs prefer to keep Nylander long term so they trade Kadri without taking money in return. Matthews signs for lesser money short term, in order to become a UFA as soon as possible. Matthews does get an offer sheet for greater money, but prefers the Leafs short term and UFA freedom sooner

    Additional Details:
Trading Kadri . Leafs need to send trade him for picks or cheap ELCs. Could be any team. Kadri at 4.6m for three more years should be relatively easy trade, though Leafs likely wouldn't get true hockey value in return.

4 years for Matthews? Wouldn't he become a UFA after that contract?

Yes. My thinking is that Matthews will get an offer sheet for greater money...maybe even 15m from Arizona. Matthews doesn't sign the offer sheet, but uses that for his negotiations with the Leafs. He'll stay a Leaf for four years and enjoy four more Cup runs. He then has choice of being playing for a team he likes in after four years. Maybe the Leafs, Rangers or a California team.
Leafs would prefer Matthews for eight years, but it just might not be possible. Maybe the Leafs have to settle for a four years since Matthews would have great negotiation power.

I still think he would want to play here. I think 6+ years would be a must or he is sprinting out of here for Arizona in 2023

Matthews has LA or NY written all over him. There is talk that ESPN wants back into hockey... I don't like what you are sayin' but I can see your point.

DAL would take that. If you want to have an ELC, I think DAL could offer you a 2019 1st, 2020 3rd and probably G Jake Oettinger. We have two good goalie prospects, so we could probably give one of them away.

I love Marner but if losing Kadri and his 4.5 is to overpay mitch I'd rather say see you later to him and get a boat load back with a ton of cap room. 8.5 is a completely acceptable number for him, double digits for an ELC winger should be a fireable offense

Leafs would get better return trading Nylander. Additionally, Kadri plays a much better defensively-sound game than Nylander, at least last I saw of him in a Toronto jersey. Sure, Nylander could eventually be molded into a center, and he could always work at his 200-foot game, but Kadri also brings a physical element that Nylander could never match. At this moment, Kadri's contract is a non-issue. If one of our top-4 contracts have to be dealt (or prospective 4 contracts, if Nylander never actually signs with us), would be Nylander.

Thanks for seeing my point....Yea, I don't like it either. But Matthews might be one RFA that has the cache to pull this off. Getting top 3 money in the league in year 4 of his NHL days, and the ability to be UFA in the minimum amount of time...7 years.

Yea, I don't like trading Kadri either. Just did for cap reasons. It was just my thinking we could keep Nylander for six more years...(starting in 2019) and Kadri just three more years. But I did the post trading Kadri. As you suggest, ,trading Nylander will option because he still under Leafs NHL control for this year and four more

i dont think Kadri should be traded for a Cap reasons, but to get best of trading him while hes still priming and on good contract ( Pacioretty income comes to mind ), resigning him wont come cheap. Cap wise i think TML are fine....proved by AGMs here many times, one of them : https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/178748

    i also tried one here : https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/174838
( actually i tried more of them but was flaked immensly )

I still say some of lower end RFA contracts are too low. Players could sign elsewhere up to 1.3m without compensation. And Ozhigakov makes up to 1.8m with bonuses. To sign him to for one year at just 1.5 and then have leave as UFA. So, I think many of forums/threads/posts are incorrect, in my opinion. You can't squeeze all these RFA out of money they can get elsewhere.
The signing of Tavares and emergence of Matthews and Marner this year just makes keeping all the Leafs "stars" on together improbable next year IMO. For cap reasons, I think one of Kadri and Nylander will have to be traded before next September.
Having too many good players on good contracts is not bad, but if there isn't cap room, there are no options but a trade. So much depends on the $$$$ that Nylander, Mathews, Marner and Kapanen will get.

I saw post....having Marner at 5.5m looks too low now. Gotta think Gardiner isn't resigned. But certainly your Kadri for Pesce trade seems like a fit for both teams.
