Next year

Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 2, 2018
Published: Dec. 4, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
22 man roster for the year to make the cap work. Gardiner takes a team friendly deal consistent with current media rumblings. Mathews on a 6 yr deal also consistent with what media is reporting as a possibility. But after all their fantasy reporting on the Nylander saga, its hard to tell sometimes if they have a clue what they're talking about.. so, there's that.

Kappy bridged. Johnsson on a one year show me deal. Marlies pick up the slack on wing. Oz signed at a 5/6 D rate. Lindholm signed at a 4 C rate. Rosen or Borgman make the jump. Lily and Sandin get another year with the Marlies.

Just like when you said there was no way Nylander would sign for less than 8.5 million?

It'd be nice to live in a world like that wouldn't. Kappy has 28 pts in 82 games over 4 seasons. I doubt he breaks the bank next year. Johnsson is a 7th round pick who is 24 yrs old, has 12 pts in 31 games over 2 years and has been healthy scratched this year. I like the guy alot, but I also doubt he breaks the bank. Oz is 26, wasn't drafted, plays 14 mins a night and doesn't pk. Can't see him getting much more than $1M. Lindholm might get more, but he's a UFA and the Goat or maybe Brooks could fill the 4c, and they're cheaper. Jake could easily get more but it sounds like he wants to stay around. If he wants more on the open market, he'll walk, but then Hyman can stay and there is some change to throw at 3/4 D.

Marner will get 15M and the keys to City Hall. And Mathews will get 16M plus an ownership stake with the Leafs.

I think it's a waste to squeeze some of the lower rated RFAs just to fit Gardiner. Rather pay Ozhignkov, Kapanen more on longer term deals.

I hear ya. That Marleau contract is really going to make things tight next year. I hear alot of people complaining about Z's contract and play too, but I don't think shipping him out is going to be the fix. If he goes its just another hole to fill. And RHD's that play 20+ min a night, pk and take the hard matchups and d-zone starts don't come cheap.

Somebody is going to get squeezed and given some peoples projections it won't be Mathews and Marner. I dunno, I think 11M and 9M will be close to the mark. I also think its most likely we lose Jake and Brown. Or Kappy, Johnsson, Oz and Sparks get their heads squeezed for a couple of years. And while those 4 are all playing well right now, they really don't have much for a body work to move them past what other players with comparable stats and games played are getting around the league. Which is close to the amounts laid out here, I think.

Who knows how this will play out. But if people thought the drama with Nylander was intense..... it'll be fascinating to see how people lose their minds on this forum with all the contracts that need to be sorted out in the coming year

IMO, it's Nylander and 6.9m cap hit that is squeezed out of LeafLand

Maybe. It woulda been nice if he came in at 500K less. But you can't fault him for putting up a good fight - seems like both sides are happy that he's back in the line up, and it sounds like both sides kept it civil. As crazy as leaf land is and previous management has been, I like that the current front office seems to be fair with their players. I like that Dubas shipped Leivo out yesterday, even if he lost that trade, instead of making him warm the pressbox again. Dubas said the trade was about keeping his word. He's also said on a few occasions that Nylander will be a leaf for a long time. I for one am glad that the Nylander trade proposals should start to calm down now... hopefully
