Habs Lean Toward the Future TOR-PIT trades

Created by: RoadRunner72
Team: 2019-20 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 11, 2018
Published: Dec. 11, 2018
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Leafs decide defensive stability is more important to them than extra offense for next 2-3 years, and grab steady top 4 offensive right shot D-man in Petry (at $4.75M per year). Kapanen better fits Habs window to compete for a Cup in 2020 onward.

Gardiner as a UFA is a good fit for the Habs left D, if he's not too expensive next summer

Habs picks up an extra first round pick at the trade deadline from Penguins for Danault. Assume Montreal narrowly misses the playoffs and picks at #12 (MTL pick) and #18 (Pitts pick) in the draft. Take Broberg (LHD) and Newhook (C/LW) to top up the prospect pool

Leafs pass... Petry is a good player and would be a solid fit,but his salary cap hit is unbearable for the Leafs. He's also not worth Kapanen.

Certainly not saying Kapanen doesn't fit with the Leafs right now as a player. The question is how much cap space will be dedicated to forwards after next summer with Matthews/Marner eating up another $20+ million, and Kapanen also needing a new contract. My thinking is that Petry at $4.75M for a couple more years helps solidify the right side D for Toronto at reasonable cost while Liljegren and Sandin grow into it over the next couple years.

Obviously my goal is to build a winner in Montreal, but I have to admit I'd love to see the Leafs grab a Cup or two in the next 3-4 years before the Habs are ready to compete at the top level again.

Except performance bonus, I’m not big on petry either.

hes a really solid RHD who recently has proven he can put up points as well. he has really good metrics and is signed to a very fair contract. only issue is that he is 31 years old and doesn't fit your current core. however, he could be a great "stopgap" for the next few seasons until guys like Lindgren, Sandin, durzi, etc.. are ready for NHL primetime. He would be by far your second best D and a Reilly-petry top pairing would be one of the better top pairings in the league

No fix performance bonuses lol. Maybe as a TDL but giving up a young roster player is what I don’t like. Thinking a player like johns, stecher, tvr. Cheaper cap hit good defensively. Adds depth, Less cost in trade. If you’re going to spend over 5m on a Dman night as well go all out on a player like pesce or spurgeon parayko.

It will hard to find a TOP4 defense with low cap, it's true that Petry will be heavy on the TML cap. But if it was real MTL will get more than Kapanen!!!
