Marleau stays a Leaf, maybe the Leafs resign him to an extension for 1 more season at 1.25 million which will drop his cap hit down to 3.75 million for the next 2 seasons. Will that work? CBA Salary Cap help needed.

uhm, to start.. you've overpaid all of Johnsson, Kapanen, Marner, Jensen and Petrovic.. Petrovic might be the closet cause he's a UFA but they won't pay that much for a third pairing dman. So start by cutting back there. At most, these dollar figures seem to be realistic
Johnsson - $2.5M (3-4 years or maybe a long term deal like Calle Jarnkrok for 6 years at the same amount)
Kapanen - $3M (2-3 years on a bridge deal, you don't give a guy a long term high dollar contract based on 1 season)
Marner $9M (7-8 years, he can ask for $10M like has been said, but with Eichel getting $10M and Draisaitl getting $8.5M Marner will come in between, and he's not a centre so it won't be closer to $10M)
Jensen/Petrovic - just don't sign. they'll both be bottom pairing guys and if they don't come in around $1M then you don't even bother.

Although I do agree that Marleau needs to be moved. Everyone says he won't be because of his NMC but his contract is highly tradable on July 2 after the Leafs pay his signing bonus and his cap hit is just high but actual money paid is low. The NMC was most likely put in place so that Marleau could choose where he goes and can't get shipped out to a team like Arizona or something. He might be a fit in San Jose depending who they resign, maybe Vegas too. All the leafs have to say to him is that he's not playing though and scratch him enough and then he'll want to be traded. But is contract is very movable in the offseason, I wouldn't be shocked if he was moved or someone like Connor Brown or something

if they sign him to an extension it doesn't drop his cap hit at all. Next season he'd be at 6.25 cap hit and then the following season his cap hit would be whatever he signed for, so if you say he signs for 1.25 then in 2 seasons from now that year the cap hit is lower. But next season his cap is unaffected. Where'd you even get that info from? lol

Kapanen doesn't sign a bridge deal, he'll hold out like his buddy Nylander did if need be. Anyhow you're saying Kapanen one season can't get him big term and money, yet you give Johnsson 1 year wonder a big term and money. ODD, compare Johnsson to the other 2 Leafs, Brown and Hyman and give him a little more than 2 million. SJS and Vegas are in cap hell too so they don't trade for a 6+ million Marleau. Thank you Lou, we're stuck with Marleau during the Cap Crunch Hell Summer.

Nylander had a lot more experience when he signed his deal. He had more leverage for a long term deal. Just because 2 guys are buddies on a team doesn't mean they think the same. Kapanen has nothing to back him up that he's a long term commitment. Do you even know hockey?

I know a lot more than you. Buddy

Age difference in Kapanen and Johnsson. Johnsson is a lot closer to free agency than Kapanen is. You sign him to a short term deal, you risk losing him in 2 years when he's eligible for free agency. & $2.5M for 6 years (similiar to Calle Jarnkrok as I stated), isn't big money at all with the cap rising. Sign Kapanen to a bridge deal for 2 years, keep his RFA rights to see how he develops and if he's worth it in 2 years, sign him long term. That's the smart move to do.
Oh, and by comparison, Anthony Mantha had 150 games played and 87 points after his ELC ended (0.58ppg) . Kapanen currently has 93 games and 35 points (0.376ppg) but let's say he keeps on pace this season for 54 points, so thats 64 points in a career 137 games (0.467ppg)... my point here is that Mantha had more experience but still signed a short term bridge deal for a lower cap hit than if he signed long term because he wasn't fully proven even coming off a season in which he had 24 goals and 24 assists for 48 points in 80 games.
But you know more than I do right?

What's the worry? Leafs just have to sign there players to reasonable contracts and then in they need to trade a player because of cap issues, they can. Leafs have might don't have much bad money. Lots of good teams and even some so so teams have better cap issues than the Leafs. Specifically some guys they would like to trade have NTCs.

I don't like the Marleau contract either, though the contract itself isn't that bad, it's just the Leafs could spend that money better elsewhere. But Marleau isn't going to agree to trade when he has a chance to win a Cup in last NHL seasons with a very good club.

Yeah I dont disagree it just would be a waste of assets in general to move Kapanen and Johnsson and keep Marleau who you know will be even more ineffective next year...

That's true but all teams have contracts they don't like. Actually since Shanahan and company, the Leafs have fewer bad contract than before and less bad money than a lot of teams. So as I tell my fellow Leaf fans...don't worry at enjoy the ride.
