Description
Not the most sexy adds I know but deals I think would help to address the right side while giving up limited assets.

I don’t want to give up Kapanen or Johnsson because of the value they provide at forward unless we were to get a player like Pietrangelo or Parayko. I know people will not like dealing Hyamn so then deal Brown but Hyman would be my pick because of his more limited offensive upside compared to brown. They are similar players and then to me just lean to the side with more offensive talent. And to get a player like Weegar who the average fan my not know I think would be a good move. He’s a quick skating puck moving d man who does play sheltered minutes right not but is showing in that time that he can be very good defensively. His shots for vs shots against % is 51.56 and would put him 3rd on the Leafs behind Dermott(54.81) and Ozhiganov(52.84). He also gets a lot of blocks(51) and hits(58) as well and that’s something I know people think we need. He’s also a RFA so controllable which helps us and won’t break the bank on his next deal.

Adding Jensen for a 3rd is just the going rate to add a d man like him at the deadline the last few years. He’s playing top pair minutes in Detroit(20:38 season average) but his last 6 games have all been over 21min per night and 24 of 42 games this year have been over 21 as well. he is also driving shots for which is a good sign on a bad team. His shots for vs shots against % is 50.35 and woulod rank 4th on the Leafs ahead of Rielly(49.77), Zaitsev(48.76) and Hainsey(47.71). Jensen also provides some physical play with blocks(56) and hits(47) this season. he is also a very mobile d man that is something we need as well as Hainsey is not that at all.

I know I have Hainsey on the bench but I’m just not a big believer in him. If he rotated with Weegar I’d be ok with that but prefer the better skater. All in all i think these moves help this year and provide some value next as you have Weegar under control for the futrue as a RFA and hes shown some real promise i think. And maybe you can resign Jensen to a 2-3 year deal to bridge till Liljegren is ready. Not a guarantee he wnts to sign here but worth a shot in my mind and for the price of a 3rd i think thats a good risk to take when you want to contend.

Let me know what you think and we can chat.

I like the idea of small moves. Thats exactly what i see coming from Dubas, most leaf fans think we're gonna get pietrangelo or parayko or someone of high caliber lol. I like the small moves idea. Just gotta find the right pieces, preferably someone who can clear our own zone...

Hyman isnt going anywhere hes a huge part of the leafs top 6 and one of the only heavy players they have. U stated Hyman or Brown for weeger. Brown and Hyman do not have equal asset value. Hymans value is greater by an amount worth noting and both assets bring back a better asset than Weeger.

Exactly. I was showing Pietrangelo deals to show value but honestly I see them dealing for or signing Jensen and bringing up guys slowly. And move Brown for a guy like Mueller who is underrated defensively.

I feel like Hyman is overvalued because of how much Babcock likes him. He's a good third line player that does his job well retriving pucks and forcheching but Johnsson, Kapanen and Brown can all do that as well with great potential for offence I belive. Just my own opinion as are the trade ideas and values

I'd be ok with Mueller as well. Shot differentials are good as well and wouldnt cost alot. Could maybe be had for a pick and prospect like Timashov

I feel like NJ would want NHL player back so I figured that Brown to NJ for Mueller and 4th rounder which is what NJ fans would agree to. Brown would get them speedy shooter who can be even their main PK guy and PP shooter/in-front-of-the-net guy and we would get underrated D who made Butcher into almost Calder nominee. He was the stopgap. I feel like if Liljegren is due to go up, Mueller would be perfect partner for him.

I wouldn't mind adding him, i was just looking at right shot d men as i know Babcock likes to or wants to have ballanced pairs.

He wants to and the reason imo why Hainsey is still there is that he doesnt want Zaitsev with Rielly which is what he would done normally a long time ago. He wants RHD with defensive capabilities there. Once Leafs get that guy, Hainsey would not be in lineup and would end up like Matt Martin last year where he hasnt played a single game.

While Jensen might welcome, is he really better than Hainsey? Reilly is having a career year with Hainsey as his partner. And Weager. Again are we getting into the thought that any 3rd pairing Dman on another team is so much that any Leafs 3rd pairing. Certainly the difference isn't Hyman.

Yes, I, too, am tired of the "blockbuster" (i.e., team-buster) trades we see on CapFriendly all too often. The Toronto defense is currently 7th in goals against at the halfway point. Why does it need major changes? Jensen and Weegar are excellent and well-conceived depth and future moves (either one might replace Hainsey in 2019 or certainly by 2020). Also, take a look at Sean Walker. There's a certain local player the Kings might be willing to trade for him . . .

Did you see the possession or chance numbers I posted? Rielly is having a career year dragging along Hainsey. Imagine what he could do with someone else that isn’t an anchor to him? As I said I wouldn’t mind Hainsey rotating on the third pair because of the weaker competition and sheltered ice time but you can’t deny he’s a liability skating wise and gets beat to easily to often.

In the off-season, Dubas is going to have to look at guys like Kevin Connauton and Stephen Johns.
