i dont think the leafs would trade matthews, maybe marner would work with this deal. The Leafs need a franchise player and matthews brings that to the team

It’s an offer sheet. Not a trade.

    Would Matthews sign it?
    Would the Leafs match?

I dunno...hopefully they get him inked before we need to find that out.

Matthews can't be offered 8 years from anyone other than TO.

why would anyone do an offer sheet? Matthews could tell the leafs to do this stuff with teams and then sign with the leafs and get them more draft picks, dumb for any team

My fault for the 8th year, absolutely right there, it would be for 7 years. The Philly trade was a way to round out the roster and get under the cap as much as possible. As for why would anyone offer an offer sheet, you only give up the picks if he accepts and Toronto doesn't match the offer.

Also a note, I'm not a Coyotes fan.

Offer sheets are a super smart strategy. If you have the cap space you can snag great young hockey players from your rival teams, effectively making them worse while improving your squad. If done correctly, even if the owning team matches ,the team giving the offer sheet can hamstring the owning team against the cap by offering a contract higher than what they would have wanted to pay.

Does Toronto want to pay AM34 $14M per year? I don't know, probably not, but an offer sheet forces them to pay that or let Matthews go. Matthews at $14M per year in Toronto significantly affects what else they can do in regards to the cap. Does Marner even get a contract in Toronto if Matthews is making $14M/year?

I was looking on here the last few days in free time and it seems if the Leafs are willing to part with Gardiner then they're in the clear and can keep Nylander too. They can also do the opposite and move Nylander in order to keep Gardiner. There's always that lottery winning trade of finding someone to take Marleau where they can keep everyone...but i doubt that happens. There is one scary thing for the Leafs that could happen with Phaneuf retiring and them getting hit with recapturing cap money or something. I'm not entirely sure what that is about.

Credit to Leafs management though, that Nylander deal was a lot lower than what he probably could have had right from the start if they weren't in cap trouble. They called his bluff and they won in that deal big time. The best part of it all is that there aren't any trade restrictions either. Well done there.

Yep. I think Gardiner is as good as gone unless there’s some sort of major shake up. When Dubas was asked about him a little while ago he tip toed around the question but all signs pointed to the fact that the leafs obviously value Matthews and Marner more and that cap space won’t be available for Gardiner.

Succession plan is already in place. I think Dermott is fully capable of taking Gardiner’s minutes and they have young bodies available to compete for the third pair (Rosen signed to a 2yr, $750k 1-way deal makes me think he has a leg up on everyone else).

Depending on how high Matthews and Marner sign for, they may need to part ways with someone like Brown, but the cap space should be available to get M&M both locked up long term

beLIeve me, so would I. I think it was both though, actually. Makes us both right. I got bored rearranging Isles lineups so this is what I've resulted to. Lol
