There is something to be said though, for an Armchair-GM like this. We Sabres fans are expecting massive roster surgery this offseason, and trust me I know it NEEDS to be done. There aren't many terrible contracts currently, a lot of players only have one year on their deals left. What the Sabres have is a dead weight problem, with a bunch of useless players taking up valuable depth positions on the roster. All that being said, it's important to see AGMs like this every now and then so Sabres' fans have an idea of what a worst-case scenario might look like. It will not be easy for Botterill to perform surgery on this roster although we all admit it must be done.

Line-D Pair Combo Thread
D pairings I like (if Risto is still here):
Dahlin - Bogo (Borgen if Bogo injured)
McCabe - Montour
Pilut - Risto
If Risto is gone, move Borgen or Nelson to Pair 1 with Dahlin and Bogo down to pair 3 with Pilut.
We will probably see Dahlin/Montour at some point, but I think they play a similar style of defense, and pairing them with contrasting styles on their other side would be beneficial to depth.
100% Agree with forward pairings of 53/9 & 37/23

We don't want Kulikov back and also there's no way he would want back. He has 6 team No-Trade list. Gotta think the Sabres are 4000% on that list lmao.

Bots wish list
Hoffman is interesting. Does FLA have room to keep him and Huberdeau and add Panarin? If they can keep all 3 then I think Hoffman is on FLA until at least the TDL. I could also see a Skinner type of situation with Hoffman, where a team in the middle moves on from a good goal scorer on an expiring contract because they can't or don't want to bring him back. I wonder if you could get Hoffman for a Skinner return: 2nd, 3rd, and B prospect before free agency so FLA knows they have room to sign all the Russians they can.
I think NYR values Kreider more than that, but I would like the Sabres to aquire him.

Trading Risto would be a mistake
You argue that you can't trade Risto because we don't have anyone to play his minutes and in the same breath say he needs to play less minutes.
Give his right side minutes to Borgen, Montour, and Nelson and watch the Sabres be just fine.

What is your value for Huberdeau?
When Jason Botterill trades Ristolainen he is not getting back Cernak or Sergachev from TB, or the equivalent from any other team. If that means you want to keep Risto, that's fine, but the Miller/Cernak/Callahan for Risto trade is never happening.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>crazyjasonhockey</b></div><div>Buffalo says no to edmonton trade IMO
I think that Mittlestadt and reinhart plus a first isnt bad but then your taking a cap dum adding 2 frst round picks on that and tage who has value and could end up being decent, pilut who looks to be a pretty good FA pick up for BUF and Ristolianen who is a good defender no matter what people say and if given a btter role could probley play much better.... i would say no deal</div></div>
Well, you're certainly not going to get the best player to lace up skates in the past 20 years with an underpayment. The point is to pay a lot to get him. With any trade involving Connor McDavid, the team acquiring 97, wins the trade IMO. Maybe I did go a little high, but the point is to make EDM say yes. Maybe I can take out Tage and a first. Or maybe take out Tage and Pilut and leave the firsts. Most every AGM where one acquires McDavid is an underpay. Most every AGM where one acts as Oilers GM trades away McDavid with an overpay in return. As a Sabres fan, I want to see how far I can push, how much I can give up and not feel terrible. It's easy to trade Sobotka and Scandella for a 2C in AGM, It's harder to trade away 3 of your past 5 first round picks. I certainly understand where you guys are coming from and fully expected fellow Sabre fans to quickly call this an overpay.

But seriously. Ristolainen is not good. How many different ways would you like me to explain to you how he is not good?
The Sabres probably couldn’t trade Risto if they wanted to. Everyone (except for you and the few Risto fanboys still clinging on) is starting to see that he’s not top d-man he was billed as when he was drafted.

I hear ya. Maybe I started to overthink the idea. It's starts with Nylander for Ristolainen, but I figure Leafs fans laugh that out of the building. Maybe Nylander & Zaitsev for Ristolainen? Zaitsev seems to be a popular dump candidate for Leafs fans, So maybe Nylander could be payment for the dump, and Risto goes back the other way. Ristolainen is so polarizing, so when trading him it's almost impossible to get a consensus agreement on what he's actually worth.

A team should absolutely do this with Point. Unless Point wants to take a discount to stay a Lightning; Tampa couldn't move out enough salary to match, plus 4 1st round picks. Point is absolutely worth it. He's a fast, skilled, 100 point center.

I don't think it's so crazy. But maybe I'm wrong. That's why there's a comment section. San Jose 1st would probably be 30 or 31 if I had to bet. Buffalo 2020 1st, I would hope, would be in the 20's, at least not lottery eligible. Tage Thompson would be the most valuable piece going the other way from Buffalo. Am I overvaluing Montour's ability to be a top pair defenseman?

Probably referring to Huberdeau deal.
Two 1sts, Sheary with retained salary and a prospect not Nylander. I think that's a win for both sides. I published an AGM with the same value except it was Sobotka instead on Sheary, but I would trade Sheary too. Not too big of deal to me. The firsts are what FLA would want. Especially if they're going after Panarin and Bob.

I like the idea of flipping Risto though for top 6 Forward. I think Jason Botterill should look into it. See what his value is.
