I don't understand why Marner would get 10m unless he get an offer sheet from some other team. That would make him the second highest paid winger in the league. Is he really deserving of that.

Ummm, he’s on pace for 30 goals and 110 points or so. That’s the leverage. Negotiations start at 10 and go up from there

well he is top 10 in league scoring i hope he signs for less but leverage being if eichel is worth 10 millions and matthews gets his bag of money hell probably want the same contract as eichel

Haven't you just proved my argument when he say "He'll probably want the same contract as Eichel". Andreas Johnsson wants the same contract as Eichel. I know all comparable have seem to gone out the window, but what I player wants just might be worse argument of all.

I don't see how Marner signs for anything less than $10m on an 8-year term (unless he's cutting the team a hometown discount). Since it's mostly the same people on here making the same comments all the time...it seems pointless to keep going over it.

Does Marner deserve more than Kucherov? If they were signing at the exact same time with the exact same taxes applying to them.... No. Kucherov gets more. But the landscape of the NHL isn't static nor is it the same in every city.

Does Matthews deserve more than McDavid? No. Same thing tho..does anyone think McDavid get more than $12.5m today tho? Probably. Then again...maybe McDavid would gladly take less if it meant his team was performing as well as Toronto.

You can't assume what guys signed for even as recently as 1-2 years ago can be applied at a direct 1:1 ratio to guys signing this summer.

I think the #'s used by the OP are a reasonable representation of what could very well end up being true. Could they be lower? Absolutely...but they could certainly be higher too. Guys singing 8 year deals off their ELC are going to get paid MORE than what they are currently worth because the teams are hoping to save in the long term and that over the back-half of the contract, the players are out-performing their contracts.
