Description

This is all with an eye toward buying out Russell at season's end.

Both guys are bad and overpaid. That being said Zaitsev does still have good size, mobility and much more upside than Russell. Here's hoping Edmonton takes a chance on that, this may have been easier to do before Chiarelli got fired lol.

Buyout structure for Russell is as follows

2019-20 $916,667
2020-21 $3,416,667
2021-22 $916,667
2022-23 $916,667

The key number there is the 2019-20 (next year's) number of $916,667 to help get through that tight year until 2020-21 when Marleau's contract comes off the books.

Why does everyone bash Zaitsev? He was dominant with Dermott and a lot of his flaws are exposed when playing with Gardiner. It's tough to do the job of two defenceman in the d zone. Gardiner can somewhat make up for those inconsistencies when he is producing points. Zaitsev may also get a lot of flak from the analytics community for having low CF etc. But this is likely due to more defensive zone starts and PK time where he plays with Hainsey, who has been showing some flaws and lack of speed as he ages.

Russell is downright horrible. The defense will be fine with
Rielly-Muzzin
Dermott-Zaitsev

No need for a buyout, Zaitsev may be slightly overpaid but he is vital in the roles he provides for the team.

The Leafs need cap space for 2019-20 more than anything right now and if they made this trade and the subsequent buyout of Russell they gain a little over $3.5M in cap space in what is more than likely to be their tightest cap year in this Matthews era.
