Description

Well aware that Nylander is the younger player with 5 more years of control attached to him. But at a time where the Leafs are a Cup contender, right before an expected Cap crunch will be hitting them in the near future, he has been struggling this year coming off his contract hold out. While the Leafs would be selling a little lower on him, they would be getting a red hot Kreider at the top of his game as the Playoffs approached. Shattenkirk might be struggling a bit, but his offensive skills off the blue line would definitely mesh well with all the fire power Toronto has (and you're getting him at a discount rate). Having him at the lower rate not only helps in getting a better pick mover over Zaitsev, but lessons the blow of Gardiner leaving after the Season. The Cap hit for both Kreider and Shatty next year will only be about $700K more than Nylander by himself, which helps during the Cap crunch.

Nylander isnt having a great year, but he is worth alot more then two aging players. Kevin doesnt fit our system as he is all offensive and no defense

As a Leafs fan, no thanks. Shattenkirk isn't what we need and Zaitsev is arguably a similar puck mover and better skater than him. Shattenkirk is a more offensive guy and we already have multiple ones of those (Rielly, Gardiner, Dermott, Zaitsev, plus Sandin and Liljegren in the minors) so taking on Shattenkirk makes almost no sense. & straight up Nylander for Kreider wouldn't even come close to fair value. As you said, Nylander has more term on his contract. After this season his cap hit will only be $6.9M per season and when Krieder becomes a UFA after next season he'll easily get more than that. So short term it doesn't help the Leafs not long term does it.

Shattenkirk was never worth the contract he wanted this is why Blues traded him, and didn't try to re-sign him because he wanted too much money. He was being carried by Pietrangelo. Also both are aging. I would say K'Andre Miller, Kravtsov, Lundkvist, or a guy like Shesteryorkin for the future would have to be in the deal.

Understandable. Worth a shot. That was more of what I was interested in. What Toronto would look for in addition to these 2. If that's the case, better off peddling Kreider elsewhere to get a solid return off him alone.
