Getting the players we need but not til the summer

Created by: blowing_the_zone
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 28, 2019

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There's been alot of Agms that look to aquire Petro, Ferland, and Jensen. Maybe we get all three, but not til the summer..

Borrowed the Petro/Nylander trade from Juice. Trade happens after Nylander is paid and his cap hit drops back to 6.9 M. Jensen and Ferland signed as UFAs. Really, I dont think Jensen is needed if the Leafs get Petro, Oz could fill the third pairing out.. and then there's no need to trade Brown..

Marleau retires after July 1st..

If Marleau retires his cap hit of 6.25 million goes back towards the Leafs cap. He was signed to his present contract after he was 35 years old. Under the CBA, if a player retires with the situation his cap hit goes back to the team that signed him.

Sorry, but he is not retiring or be traded, he holds his own destiny and the Leafs can not afford for him to retire.

Marleau absolutely holds the cards and his destiny. He could very well decide to retire, that would be his choice, and one that all athletes make at some point. If he does retire, his contract can be traded, what the value of that is in a trade, I don't really know

fair enough.. I could see Marner hit 10M on 8 years. I could also see him take less term, maybe its closer to 9M at 6yrs

Again because of his contract was signed after he turned 35 years old the hit goes to Toronto not the team he is traded too. They are on the hook for the cap hit.

What is the incentive for the Sharks to do this? A 2nd round cap hit when they're likely going to have cap issues themselves if they try and sign EK?

You're basically giving any team 20 goals/20 assists with that 3rd year and leadership. I'm just not sure people want the cap hit for a 2nd. Might take a prospect or a roster player too.

That 3rd year is the entire reason the Sharks let him walk.

No you're not giving a team a 40 point player, you're trading a retired player with a cap hit 6.25m If he wants to plays, he's a Leaf

true, Marleau is likely to hit 20/20 again, if he plays. But if he chooses to retire it'll be 0/0, so not really giving anything away.. The leafs seemed to be the only team that was willing to give Marleau 3yrs. It's not out of the realm of possibility, with the way his contract is structured, that his 3yr contract is really a "2yr" deal..

And fair enough * 3.. I don't know what it would take to trade his contract if he retires, but it is tradeable

Starting to think you could be right, Pal. With the Muzzin trade and Marner upping hsi value this year, Nylander might be the guy that moves to rebalance the roster and manage the cap. Juice's idea for a Petro trade in the summer, with how Nylanders contact is set up, and with extending Petro, seems to make alot of sense and checks alot of boxes.. the only real downside to that is Dubas needing to walk back his comments on how Nylander would be a leaf so long as he was around.. oh, well... foot meet mouth

I thought the retirement of Marleau was a real possibility with his poor play before the all star break. Then he goes out and has played a couple of good games...so maybe he won't retire now.
Personally I not that enamoured with the thought of Pietrangelo especially long term. The purpose of trading Nylander is too create cap which I think is needed, not just replace him with an equally expensive player.
Dubas's public comments should not have been made IMO. But I don't put any credence in them. Again he "might have been sincere", but just a likely he did for public consumption so the media and fans would stop asking about the cap and who is going to be traded to make the cap work. The front loading of Nylander's cap makes him an easy trade. What Dubas said to Nylander privately is so much more important that the words said at a press conference. How often to hockey executives say publicly...".It's our intention to sign this player. or the coach isn't getting fired." Do you really believe, "Mexico will pay for the wall?"

Lol. No, I don't think Mexico will pay for that wall.. smile

Marleau has looked good the last couple of games, and he went on a run last year after the break too, so maybe he has some left in the tank. Doesn't change the fact that he'll be 41 next year or how his contract is structured. His 3 yr contract just might be a 2yr deal.. its possible.

Ive seen a bunch of comments from you about trading Nylander. And i was always opposed to it. But the dynamic has changed a bit, with Marners, and to a lesser extent Kappy's, play. And it certainly hasn't helped that Nylanders having a hard time finding his old form, although I don't think this lasts. He's too good of a player, he'll get back to where he should be..
But you could be right, that might happen with another team.

This Muzzin trade has added a new wrinkle of sorts. As much as I think he was aquired to play with Mo this year, i also think he is Gards replacement next year. That still leaves us looking for a top pairing RD to play with Reilly. I wouldn't be upset if that ended up being Petro.
