No one is gonna take that Zaitsev contract.

I don't think the Ducks do that with Zaitsev in the deal. They may do it for AJ and Liljegren. But everyone seems to want Kappy or Nylander.

bet by next season he wont be a Leaf because somebody will take him. Add on a top prospect and maybe a draft pick and it will be all it takes for a team looking to get to cap floor

They aren't going to take his contract and give up a top line pairing defenseman I will tell you that much, and that's just fax no one is going to take him unless you pay them handsomely.

Zaitsev isn't as good as Manson (to put it charitably), and Johnsson and Liljegren don't make up for the difference AND improve the Ducks. You're short a first here, and probably more.

I difference between Manson and Zaitsev might be Johnson but certainly not Liljegren too. Again this obsession that the Leafs have to trade so much get to mid range Dman.

Manson at $4.1m offers significantly more than Zaitsev at $4.5m...the reality is that Zaitsev, at best, provides neutral cap ballast in a trade. It's not so much...how much better is manson than zaitsev...it's...how willing is Anaheim to take on $4.5m for another 5 years to downgrade their defence? Johnsson? Certainly not enough I would imagine.

Good players on good contracts have an increase in trade value
Ok players on bad contracts have a decrease in trade value

So it's not just going from an 'OK' Zaisev to a "Good" Manson that you're paying a premium for....you're also paying a premium to have a cap efficient roster. Zaitsev right now represents about $1m - $1.5m in cap inefficiency for the Leafs....and for a team that will need every last dollar of cap space...there's a legit incentive to need to replace Zaitsev.

That being said...what is Johnsson willing to re-sign for...if you can get him under $2m on a 1yr extension he's a good player on a good deal. When is Liljegren expected to be ready? If he can contribute on the right side of the blue line within a couple years while on an ELC...that's a huge efficiency.

As far as this trade, though, I can't see Anaheim trading Manson for Johnsson and Liljegren alone...and Zaitsev is more likely to lower the value of the package the leafs are sending..
