What is Washington Doing

Created by: Quavo

Description
Is it just me or did Washington kinda get fleeced with these trades? Maybe it's cause I'm a pens fan but seriously a 3rd round pick for a 4th liner? And then their next trade they give up a 2nd and one of their best defensive prospects for a guy who's had one good year. Now Jensen's good and I think they resign him but Bowey is only 23 and was having a pretty good year. IDK I'm probably just biased a little

I'm not exactly sure what the deal is either....but my speculation is that WSH is doing whatever it can to continue to compete for the stanley cup which means prospects and draft picks are not entirely worth as much to them as other teams, they are severely limited in terms of salary cap so they can only afford certain players and don't want to give up too much NHL talent to ruin their chemistry and production for the playoffs. Furthermore, I would assume that although Bowey is valuable, they have other younger D prospects like (Alex Alexeyev) who fit more into their future plans when their stanley cup window is not as open as it is now.

Not trying to just argue with a pens fan, but Bowey is pretty awful, like worse than Orpik. Sure he is 23, but on the caps he wouldn't play unless 2 or 3 guys were out. He is good for 2-3 Grade A chances against each game he plays, which is why he rarely played. Bowey was a 2nd round pick, but he is probably valued as a 4th or 5th rounder project. In terms of Value caps traded a late 2nd (55-62) and a 4th Round guy for Jensen (very underrated imo), and an early 5th most likely (BUF will probs have pick #10 so 165)

Alexeyev & Johansen are going to be top 4 D down the road imo. Seigenthaler & Djoos are better than Bowey right now and were drafted in 7th & 6th round.

exactly. that's precisely my point above. WSH has other guys that will fill the void that bowey would have filled and obviously WSH values alexeyev and johansen more than Bowey and they fit in better in terms of timing (meaning when they are predicted to arrive/contribute)

Bowey is not good enough to play in the NHL and he certainly isnt one of our best defensive prospects. Also looking at Jensen's analytics he's been a bright spot on a very bad Detroit team. I like that trade for both sides, and I don't think a late third for Hagelin is too much of an overpayment considering prices always rise at the deadline

I Agree with you except you said you think Bowey is Valuable. He is terrible. Take a look at this:

I actually think its a great move for Jensen. I like him better than the Kempny move last year.

well yeah. and those are some interesting statistics and measurements but at same time i wouldnt go so far as to say Bowey is terrible. He's just young and inexperienced and won't be able to help Capitals now or next year even which goes to both of our points that this is a trade that is totally worth it for Capitals because they don't have a need for Bowey right now and will be fine in the future because they have Alexeyev and Johansen but can use Jansen to continue their run for another cup

Completely agree. Giving up a late 3rd for Hagelin could be an overpayment. But bottom 6 speed and PK are caps biggest flaws... So its a direct solution hopefully.

Yes, Bowey could turn into a decent player, just not on the caps. I think the caps brought him up way too soon when he wasn't ready and kinda ruined him. He need ice time to develop and he should get that in Detroit

hag isnt a 4th line player..... hes a bottom 6 but his talent level is above your average 4th line. the capitals have a below average pk and he will help make that better plus his speed will cause a lot of issues for 4th line match ups.. also a 3rd is nothing....you guys dumped every 1st round pick for the last what? 5 years and just gave fla 3 picks in a lateral move?

dman that are equal to or better than bowey in the caps system...

I agree they slightly overpaid on each. That's how trade deadlines work. Teams figure out which of the twenty available players they want. Then they get into mindless bidding wars on those two guys. If they win, they overpay compared to what kind of trades would make sense in the summer. But what they get for that is the chance to make last minute changes their team needs before the playoffs.

Last year I didnt' understand what Kempny brought until halfway through this year, but now I get it. I'm confident these guys add something important, each, but I also think Washington got really, really lucky with Smith-Pelly clearing waivers, because I think he also contributed a lot more than people can agree on, last Spring, what with the seven goals, all the checking, and the penalty killing.

Brassard and Sheahan for Bjugstad and Mccann is not a lateral move. Jugs and Mccann are significantly better than Brassard and Sheahan.

Also 2 of those 1st rounders got us Kessel but the other 3 you have a point

brassard > jugs... jugs is on pace for maybe 25 points at. 4+million cap hit. McCann is good but you could have got him for maybe a 3rd......overpayment and now instead of having a lot of cap free you have millions tied up in underachieving players like Pearson and jugs

Bjugstad: 5 pts in 11 games with Pens
Brass: 15 pts in 40 games with Pens

Bjugstad: 2 way center man with physical presence
Brass: Can't play defense and couldn't score while playing with Kessel

Bjugstad: Age 26 with 2-3 more years left
Brass: Age 31 with one year left

Yeah I'd say he's worth the extra mil and a 2nd rounder

Brassard was a .375 ppg player in Pitt
“Jugs” is currently .45ppg in Pitts

2018-19 season

Jugs .39 ppg( rounding up)
Brassard. .38ppg

Maccann is better than shehands but he’s not worth 2nd 2 4ths and a roster player

She hand has 4 points in 10 games in fla
13 points in 59 games. Playing as a 4th line center

Mccann 3 points in 11 games w penguins.

21 points in 57 games

About as lateral as you can get

Also look at the teams records since the trade.... just saying.
