If Caps Trade Holtby and Niskanen Offseason

Created by: MK57

Description
Try not to get caught up on the trade values or specific pieces, this is just to illustrate what kind of free agent acquisitions could be possible if the Caps unload the Niskanen contract and trade Holtby before he walks for nothing. If they look for picks and prospects back that don’t contribute to the cap, they could easily target Stone or Panarin and field a very competitive team. They’ll have to put a young and/or cheap 4th line out to do so, but totally possible.

Caps can bring Samsonov up to spot start some games for NHL experience. For the inevitable “you’re an idiot and you can’t get Stone for $9.5mm”: Caps could bump up to $10mm on Stone and not do the Brown trade or just not sign Benn or an equivalent 6D and be fine on cap. Again, just toying with possibilities.

Trades
1.
WSH
  1. Andersson, Rasmus
  2. Dubé, Dillon
  3. 2020 1st round pick (CGY)
Additional Details:
Not sure on the value but the idea here is that Holtby likely fetches a 1st round pick and prospects or young players with upside and small cap hits.
2.
WSH
  1. 2019 2nd round pick (DAL)
  2. 2020 4th round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
Again, not meant to get hung up on the value of the trade itself, just meant as a placeholder for a deal that sends Niskanen out for picks only. The idea is no returning cap hit so WSH has money available.
3.
TOR
  1. Gersich, Shane
  2. Sutter, Riley
  3. 2020 4th round pick (DAL)

Lehner seems to be doing just fine in his new home right now. $2m x 2 probably will not win him over in UFA.

I don’t see Holtby being traded.... I’d say it’s 50/50 in them keeping him and trading samsonov

In a Bob for Holtby trade, what other assets would be needed to make the value balanced and the deal completed (with extension, of course).

Caps would be incredibly stupid to trade Samsonov. I highly doubt they do it. But I also don't see them trading Holtby (even though they should). They'll probably just play him out to his last year and let him walk.

The reason Holtby would be traded is because they couldn't afford him the following season. Bob will cost just as much AAV wise as Holtby so it wouldn't make sense.

This is almost exactly what I did the other day. Would be soooo smart to trade Holtby and Niskanen to get pieces for the future while also making room for Stone who is the next Hossa. It would keep the Caps competetive for years to come, even past the Ovi/Backy era.

Pass on Benn though, Siegenthaler is better and cheaper. Lehner would cost more but don't think Caps should go after anyone. Find a good duo between Sam/Vanecek/Copley. If they don't work for some reason sign a vet for a year.

Fair and true on Lehner - there are other big name FA goalies on the market this offseason so I’d be curious what that does to his value. I still think the Caps would want to sign someone just as an insurance policy, but maybe that’s on a very team-friendly, 1-year deal.

As far as Benn goes, that was more of just a “and they’d still have room to sign a 6D if desired”. Whether they choose to fill that role internally or not, makes less of a difference I guess. They may want to add a more proven defenseman if they are becoming less certain in goal, but that depends on quite a bit. In that sense, it would be roughly equivalent to not trading Niskanen, but just getting a cheaper contract. Obviously the biggest impact here is to the forward group anyway.

If you want Holtby this summer, the price above is what the Caps probably want:. 1st, potential future #1C, another decent prospect.

Now, if the above team signs Lehner and Benn to Burakovsky's cap space, his RFA rights could be available pretty cheap.
