1. That just straight up doesn't fit under the cap
2. No way Carolina takes that deal

Carolina laughs you out of the building. Think of what you gave up for Muzzin, and then realize that pesce is better, has a lot of term, and a great cap hit. If you don’t want to give up Nylander, it would take something like Kapanen, a prospect, and a first, at least

People always say this and then they get traded for an average prospect and a second lol. Not saying that'll happen, just everyone overvalues their players. But yeah that trade above is awful

Yeah I’m with you that to many people way over value Pesce, but this trade is way undervaluing him

There's no doubt that Carolina, and specifically Pesce will be a target for the Leafs this summer, but what would be one possible reason for Carolina to make this trade? Maybe they value mid round picks more than having better hockey players on their team? I can't think of anything else.

How does that phone call between Dubas and Waddell go? Hey Don - I know you have lot's of RHD on your team, and one more probably good enough to make the team next year (Fox), so how would you like to get rid of one, and in exchange you can have an older, worse, more expensive RHD in return? No deal, well how about a 3rd RD pick as well?

Deal!!

If you recall people were saying the demands would be the same for muzzin before he got traded. I wouldnt expect a home run return here either. Pesce is a fine defensive dman, but he doesnt get you nylander, or kap, a prospect a first +. Pesce / Kap is probably a fine swap for both teams.

Pesce has 6 years on an amazing deal. Muzzin had 2. And pesce is the better player. No real comparison. The kings needed to get value from Muzzin. The canes can wait 5 years happily

If I'm not mistaken, aren't you required to have at least one extra player (a scratch) on your roster?

minimum roster size is 20, limit of 23. There is no requirement to carry an extra player.

The first deal doesn't really make sense for Carolina. Even if Toronto offered Zaitsev AND Brown for Pesce I do not see why Carolina takes on a replacement D. Although maybe a downgrade in one position to add a young strength in another may be more tempting than prospects and picks.

The 2nd one requires Edmonton to find a way to free up cap to even think about. They likely would have to ask Toronto to take on Manning or drop the picks and offer Benning again.

Interesting ideas though.

Agree it's not a great comparison. Muzzin is more offensive, has a better track record, but pesce is more valuable given his age and cap hit. All i am saying though, is everyone clearly overvalues what they think these guys are worth. Can toss in a bunch of other D and other players like Muzzin, Montour, gudbranson, simmonds, Mcquaid etc that have all been rumoured to the leafs, and have all gone for peanuts compared to what people on here demand as "reasonable" payment from the leafs.

Kap > 1st grundstrom and durzi, which is reflected in the possibility of getting a player of pesce's caliber and control, but at the same time the leafs were unwilling to move him for muzzin.
