You can't think it'll be this easy to dump Callahan.

The EDM trade does follow their trade logic lol. But I agree they wouldn't be that stupid.

I think there were serious discussions between BriseBois and Betterall. IMO Betterall wanted a roster player and a pick for Ristolainen. If Callahan is not moved, it will be very difficult to sign Stralman and Point (I am presuming Coburn and Giardi will not be offered acceptable contracts). So who be could the roster player, IMO only Gourde or Miller do not have an NTC or NM or similar. As many of you have indicated it will take more than a 2nd to move Callahan. Pulling all of this thoughts together, Ristolainen for Gourde and a second, with Callahan and 2 seconds. the 3 seconds would just about add up to 2020 first, so the trade offered was Callahan, Gourde 2020 first for Ristolainen and 2020 third. Betterall wanted a younger player, JT Miller, did not want to add a pick then Gretzky said no. Would any of you care to speculate?

Callahan is still a serviceable 3rd or 4th line player but has a ntc. So value would depend on if he is willing to play for the team in question or if it is a trade and buyout situation. If it's a trade and play, I would put the value at a mid round pick and either a grade A prospect or a good young roster player to take his contract. If it's a trade and buyout situation then the price goes up.

I know you may have been asking more of speculation on a Buffalo Tampa trade but if Tampa trades Callahan it should be only to clear cap and not to take on any more cap than neccessary. They have a stellar team and should focus on keeping the young group of guys they already have together.

Really the only reason to move Callahan is to clear space for their own players not to take on big contact from another team. I figure if they need a RHD, they can probably get Stralman and/or Giardi at hometown discounts. These guys are on a very good team, have made their tens of millions and probably don't need top dollar elsewhere.
As you suggest, Tampa has only three options to offload contracts....and mostly for futures. Miller and Gourde are the easy ones. Getting Callaghan to waive is tough.
Callaghan apparently still has deep connections with Rochester so maybe Buffalo is one of few options for his trade. Callaghan and Gourde to Buffalo.....for nothing, might serve both teams well. Tampa gets lots of cap space. Sabres get Gourde for five years, if that's the guys they want. If not Miller.
Tampa's other option is to keep Callahan and then trade probably both Miller and Gourde for ELCs and or picks.
