Initial Offseason Thoughts

Description
Several things to unpack as I think this offseason is a very important one for the Red Wings and it all starts with the draft, more specifically the draft lottery.

They need to find a way to improve their scoring, their blue line and try to clean out some space for their young players...particularly at forward. A top three pick to go along with the picks of Zadina and Veleno last season would put the Wings in position to maybe move a young forward to help the blue line. The obvious target there is Jacob Trouba who brings a lot of things the Wings need on the back end and, if the rumors are to be believed, wants to play in Detroit. I put Athanasiou and Hronek there as I think the Jets will want a young D back and AA gives them a somewhat cost controlled forward who can add another dimension to their current talented group. In reality, if Winnipeg prefers Mantha over AA then that works to and they can sqap out any young defenseman prospect not named Dennis Cholowski.

As for the FAs, I used Jimmy Howard but it can be any goalie with starting ability that they can get for $4M. Jake Gardner could be a Larry Murphy 2.0 pick up for Detroit. He is a good puck mover and passer from the back who has for some reason fallen out of favor in Toronto but won't break the bank.

Daley is just a dump, take anything anyone will give for him to open up the spot.

The best part is there is still a lot of flexibility as this would keep them under the cap without having to free up Zetterberg or Franzen's space.

Don't get too hung up on the order of the lines, I do not generally put much stock in "that line is listed above this line so they will get more/better ice time"...especially in a fantasy GM situation.

If Trouba really does want to come to Detroit then trading anything for him would be dumb. He would just go to arbitration this offseason, get a one year deal, then sign with Detroit next summer.
Also, not that it matters, but that second line you have - oof. That would be by far the worst second line in the league. It would be one of the worst 4th lines in hockey actually.

I don't think the Wings should target any free agents. Even signing a couple of good free agents we are still going to be bad. Rebuilding takes time.
Detroit needs AA way more than they need Trouba. AA generates 2 to 3 times the offense that Trouba can and when your 25 in goals for you need all the offense you can get.
That is way too much to pay Gardiner who isn't all that good. We are much better off giving Hronek and Cholowski more ice time.
Trading good young prospects and draft picks for veteran players is why our minor league teams were full of average talent and why this rebuild it taking longer than it should. We had restock our pipeline not just the team. If we keep doing it and in 5yrs we will be going through this all over again.

lol. if you think $5.5M for 4 years is too much for Gardiner then you're nuts. He's easily getting more than that as a free agent as long as his back heals up properly like its expected to. Think more around $7-$7.5M per season (and yes he's worth it. watch some hockey to find out)

This was actually my concern is that $5.5M would not be enough.

Trading for him now guarantees they get him on the team and gives them a year to negotiate a long term deal (although likely the deal does not get done without an extension agreed to).

Sure, AA drives his own offense more than Trouba would...but you have to keep pucks out of your own net as well as put them in the other team's net to win. Right now AA only really does one at an NHL level...and mostly for himself. If they have a top three pick in the next draft they would have Larkin, Mantha, Zadina, Athanasiou, the draft pick, Veleno, Bertuzzi and possibly Svechnikov. Trading from a position of strength to build up a weakness is how good teams build. Like when Tampa traded Drouin for Serganchev.

He's really dependant on his health. Reports are saying he might have the same back issue that Zach Parise had. That could derail his career by over a year if surgery is needed. Worst possible time for him to get it. But if he's healthy, he's a top 3 dman on most teams in the league. $7M would be the lowest point

You think AA is selfish? Really? You do realize he is now Detroits #2 center.
With the Tampa trade they could afford to trade Drouin when they have Stamkos, Johnson, Kucherov I can keep going but you get the Point.
Green, DeKeyser, Kronwall, Ericsson, Daley and Bowey (who is quick and has ok hands but has no idea about positioning). Then you add Gardiner and Trouba and the only ice Cholowski, Hronek and any other defensive prospects will be as forwards.
I just think it is way too much to give you for Trouba.
I can see Gardiner putting up around 30 points a season. His last 3 seasons are higher but I think it has more to do with the situation. You could put Ericsson in his place and he'd come close to 50pts as well.

To trade AA for Trouba at this point would be completely nuts. AA moving just isn’t likely to happen now but even tho it was a possibility a year ago.
Mantha would be a much easier piece to part with and would still be enticing for the Jets. The Wings will have enough wingers so I see Mantha as a possibility even though they should wait until free agency for Trouba. Also including Hronek in the deal just isn’t a good idea

No way in hell am i moving either AA and Hronek for Trouba. He's likely coming home next summer any ways and we can sign him for free.
