How many times do people have to be told no to realize something ISN'T going to happen? .. Toronto will not trade Connor Brown straight up for Matt Benning. It was turned down in real life. It's not happening.

You just have to think that 99.99999% of all the stuff you see here will never happens...

Well it was turned down when Hainsey was still under contract this year, things change maybe they will swap the two 2M players, not resign Hainsey and bring up young bottom 6 player or sign cheap UFA vet for under 1M either way that would be 2M cap savings for a team that needs room

Just curious because I never saw anything about it, is there a source to this?

Sportsnet was all over it at the trade deadline when it happened. I don't have the exact article but you could probably google it easily. There was an Edmonton post that had the details too. Basically Edmonton asked for Brown for Benning straight up, Toronto declined (obviously), and Toronto declined with some package the included Brown going to Edmonton for Kassian and Larsson, Edmonton declined. It was a pretty well talked about thing at the time

Ok so from what I can research, and yes this whole thing is about semantics really but, the offer of Benning for Brown was not accepted yes but not for the reasoning you suggested. Which is why I questioned it from the start. According to pretty much every article I was able to find, the goal in moving Brown is simply to cut some cap. Nothing more. If it wasn't for the cap, they'd keep him. Not because Benning is such a inferior player to Brown but because going from 2.1 to 1.9M serves almost no benefit to the Leafs. It was reported that they countered with Brown for Khaira because of his less costly cap hit but it appears EDM didn't want to do that for that exact same reason as they're trying to be cap cautious as well. So all in all nothing happened. Obviously there were some Larsson, Kassian talks etc etc but they never panned out either.

Anyways, I'm totally being fickle here and I know that but I just wanted to point out that any Benning for Brown deal wasn't turned down because "Obviously" but rather because Leafs aren't moving Brown because they don't want him anymore. They want to cut some cap for obvious reasons. Had Benning been making 750K and he indeed was a player they liked (no way of knowing really), chances are a deal could have been done.

Truth is whether you'd do it or not, Benning for Brown does make some sense. Both young, both pretty decent depth players, Brown history with McDavid, Benning is a RHD that TOR could use etc etc. With that said, I ultimately would agree that Toronto shouldn't do it precisely because of the reason that is reported as the reason why it feel through. They need to cut as much cap as possible and Brown for Benning simply doesn't give them what they really want.

I never said it was due to one player being more inferior to the other. I just said that it's not going to happen and that it was turned down for a reason. A main reason in that is the cap situation. Benning would be a 3rd pairing d-man in Toronto. Leafs can have one of their younger guys fill that spot (Liljegren, Duszak, etc.) and use Brown to get a better player.. that's most likely what they'll do or they'll get a younger, better prospect than Benning. That's why it doesn't work for Toronto. There's really no logic to get Benning, especially for Brown who could bring back a better return

Droin is Hab's mistake 2 live with.
So should Brown be with the leaves.
Sheary is fine, if he's cheap.
