What’s not to like? We get the cap space the upgraded D and if we fall short and spurgeon walks we have a first to try again.

Wild fans come up with the best proposals.

I saw MBassman's suggestion in the other thread. If this happened it would solve alot of short and mid term challenges for the leafs, and help the wild out at the same time.

I'd hate to lose Nylander, but itd be hard to be upset about it with a trade like this. . Resigning Spurgeon and having him next to Mo long term would more or less allow us to sort and solidify our d internally over-time, while more or less locking up our playoff projected top 6 forwards. ..That would be just about perfect..

I like the trade, but only if he re-signs. Yea you get a 1st rounder, but no guarantee that works out.

I think maybe my favourite thing about this trade after gaining spurgeon is keeping brown. He is just one of those guys you would love to have around, especially in the playoffs. With browns salary and the 1.2m in cap space this would allow us to upgrade the defence even further if we wanted to. Could make a big splash at TDL.... could you imagine piling Petro on to this.....

You are right. This was originally a 1 for 2 deal... I negotiated the pick. You get one year of spurgeon, the ability to lock in kappy and Mango long term, keep brown if you choose and can still load up at deadline. The first is something to pull out of the deal if all else fails. With marleau coming off the books and prospects coming up the future seems bright after this agm. We can even piec in UFA’s here and there.

Yep. It's just about perfect for our side. And instead of taking a step back next year, this could be a big step forward, especially with a smart TDL acquisition. Now, you and Bassman need to find a way to make this happen.. clock starts now..

And yep * 2. Brown takes alot of flack at times, but he's about to earn his keep in the coming weeks, methinks. He certainly has that extra gear that shows up in the playoffs.

True, there would be no guarantee that he resigns, but with Marleau and Muzzin expiring and the annual cap increase, the leafs could be looking at 13M in cap with only Dert and Bracco to resign. That should leave lots of coin to put together a compelling offer to keep Spurgeon around. And if we could, I think him and Mo would be just about perfect as a pairing..

Wild fan here. I was about to bash this until I saw the conditions on the 1st.

It’s obviously very tempting and makes a ton of sense for both teams. How bad actually is Zaitsev though? You guys tear him apart on here pretty often.

I am one person who does not bash zaitsev. I actually like his play. He is overpaid about 1m. So judge him on that scale. He is roughly a 3.5m 2nd pair Dman. He is solid defensively and plays PK and tough hold the lead minutes. He can also QB a PP and put up points depending on how you use him. With leafs cap crunch coming next year it is the over paid players that need to go first. Zaitsev isn’t horrible or useless he is a bit over paid for now. Certainly a serviceable 2nd pair guy who can play 20min+.

We tear every leaf player apart, it just depends on whose turn it is to be the scapegoat. This is a prerequisite for being a leaf fan.. But things should calm down for Z now that Gards is back from injury and we're playing Boston..

Seriously though, Z is a legit 2nd pairing guy, imo. 20+plus minutes a night, big PK duty, one of our only physical d, Team Russia player et etc. The general consensus is he's probably overpaid by 500k to 1M and his term is too long. If we didn't have a cap crunch next year, I doubt the leafs would even consider trading him..

I have no problem with the trade itself. I'm not sure Spurgeon is the best partner for Rielly though. What I see Rielly needing is the equivalent of the Karlson/Methot pairing that Ottawa had. A Methot type would make them a true #1 pairing. And then Muzzin/Dermot could hopefully grow into a solid 2nd pair. Spurgeon/Rielly won't have the size to defend against big teams come playoff time.

Don’t let spurgeon’s size fool you. He his one of the best Dmen in his own end. He is a true 2way Dman.

Big loss for Minnesota. They take on 8M in cap, lose the best player in the trade, and lose a 1st round pick when it looks like they're going for a rebuild.

That's fair, but Minnesota is getting hosed in this trade.

I don’t think so at all. They get the right hand forward they need a a replacement rhd to play second pair behind dumba. I think the part your missing is spurgeon being on the last year of his contract. Term means something in trade value.

It's definitely a factor, but probably not a large one. Spurgeon was one of the best defensemen in the league this year, maybe if you take out the incoming 1st round pick, it's a better deal

Nope, no deal... giving up nylander for 1 year of spurgeon. Like I said in the original post... spurgeon is not 5 nylanders better than zaitsev. Pure and simple. The chances are fairly good that we would re sign spurgeon and the 1st would stay with the wild. An outside chance we win the cup as well. So no garuntees there. In reality Toronto would prefer 4 years of spurgeon over a mid to late first.

Think we will agree to disagree here. I do appreciate the input though.
