Potential

Created by: Lavitz66
Team: 2019-20 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 12, 2019
Published: Apr. 12, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Just a bit of basic framework for changes that can and I think need to happen. It's not that the team is horrible right now, but they need to start maneuvering before they put themselves in a really bad spot. Of course many of these will rely on what cap space other teams have, etc. but I think the trades are more than fair.

I would think Myers wants more, and LAK does not take on JJ contract, they already have enough cap issues as it is

again, the trade is a placeholder for the type of player we could get back in that move. It doesn't have to be LA specifically. And these moves free up more cap space if Myers wants north of 5, which I agree, he probably will

I like the idea of clearing the blue line, however I don’t think Myers is a wise signing. I think Petterson has gotta get in the top 4 at some point. He’s gotta Dumolin Junior written all over him. If we can run a top 4 of
Dumo-letang
Petterson-Schultz
That’ll be really solid

Or even:
Dumo-letang
Top4D- Schultz
Petterson- Gubranson

I can’t get over how well Gubranson is Playing. He’ll probably fall off and turn back into a scrub but man, I love him for Pitt rn

No issues at all with Gudbranson's play so far. Guy has been holding his own and then some. I don't dislike Hornqvist or DeSmith, and I see the still present potential in Maatta. It's all about giving a big of breathing room. I do like the Idea of moving Petterson up and having Gudbranson stay. Maybe put Rikola with him (I like Rikola's game). The Myers signing was just a personal want on my behalf since I like his game.

I know but in General, I do not think anyone will take on JJ contract unless you package something really really good w it, I think you are stuck with him

Gudbranson was a number 3 overall. I don't know why people want to be shocked that he can play. Clearly the talent was their which is why he was drafted so high. He was in a bad fit. He's going to be a huge steal for the penguins and there is no way they should trade him. He's solid on the back end and he brings physicality to the team with a willingness to go after people who get out of line.

Maatta and JJ should be dumped. I totally agree with that at this point. But they are probably going to different teams. And there is no way JJ is going to LA, they been there done that.
Hornqvist is almost impossible to trade due to his NTC. Even if you want to trade him you are stuck with him.

What I really don't like about this is you aren't playing any youth. Bjorkqvist Hallander both have potential to play up to the main club next year. There might be a few surprises in Almeida, Drozg,, Nikita if he signs, and Angelo. They have to be willing to take a chance on their youth if they aren't getting results.

It's a myth to think JJ contract isn't movable. There are so many teams that have such worse players it's not even funny. The guy played most of the year on his off side, and totally sucked there, but while he was playing on the left side his numbers were pretty solid. He went from a -20 playing RHD to a -4 on the year. That's a +16 difference playing on his natural side. You can say what you want but teams will notice that. You aren't talking about a player like Ristolainen who finished -41.

There were a lot, and I do mean a lot of defense men, that looked much much much worse than JJ did this year.

Risto is only 24 and a right handed shot, who still has time to grow, JJ is 32 a left handed shot, and out of his prime.. I see your point tho, many worse contracts

It's not 1970s hockey anymore. You are expected to perform at 24. Players are getting kicked out this league in their early 30s. Hell he's been in the NHL for 6 years now. Being 24 isn't an excuse.
Especially when you realize the previous season ain't been much better.

Either way, you could do a lot worse than JJ in this league right now, which is why even at 32 JJ will still find a home. It's hard as hell to play defense, and rather people like it or not, JJ can still play it better than a lot of other people and his cap hit isn't outrageous.

Rutherford will not trade Jack Johnson unless Johnson asked to be traded, which he is not going to do. People REALLY need to accept this and get past it.

If they decide to move Gudbranson a lot of teams will take him. There is no need to give away DeSmith for it to happen.

I would rather have Hornqvist than Kase, even without the extra 3rd given away. You AGM had plenty of cap space to keep Hornqvist.
