Lol comparing Dzingel I’ll stop talking to you rn

Dzingel had 26 goals 66 points in 78 games last year, 23g 18a 41pts the season before
Drouin had 18 goals 53 points in 81 games last year, 13g 33a 46pts the season before

Oh right they are not even close to the same player right now

Maroon score 27 goals in Edmonton, he's better than Lehkonen SIKE SIKE SIKE Depends who you play with. Dzingel played with Duchene. Drouin playing with Domi 50 points in 60 games, they switch Lehkonen & Drouin and Drouin didnt produce at all on Kotkaniemi line.

The point is... We're not trading this guy now without having the return we want. That's it. Many habs fans want him out because he wasn't able to put as most points as Domi last season, while playing with an 18 yo C and a guy like Lehkonen or Armia... These aren't great conditions for him to produce. In his firs 60 games, he had 50 pts... Not bad. He was playing with Domi back then. We're simply not trading a guy with this potential...

First 61 games, 17 G 29 A 46 P, ~17:30 ATOI and over 2:00 PPTOI
Last 20 games, 1 G, 6 A 7 P, ~14:00 ATOI and ~1:00 PPTOI

He had a rough stretch, but he wasn't going to work through it playing reduced ice time with "kan't score at home" Kotkaniemi or "The Finn with no finish" Lehkonen. I don't have cute names for Weal or Armia, but they weren't going to help him break out of a slump. His work ethic is still questionable at times and he has a habit of trying to make the skill play instead of the safe play, but he's actually shown improvement from last season, so I wouldn't say he's peaked quite yet.

Montreal insured Sergachev was an NHL ready player at the time of the trade, by including a conditional 2nd, and Drouin's value was low at the time due to publicized conflicts with the organization and Tampa's desire to unload him.
#4 for Drouin is a calculated risk without that insurance, Drouin's put the off-ice distractions behind him, and Montreal management has no need or desire to move him.

The immediate benefit of acquiring Drouin for Colorado is worth the potential benefit of picking 4th OA which likely won't result in an NHL player next season, let alone a top 6 winger, and carries a risk of not panning out at all.

Drouin also had a very solid season after the 16/17 season and showed that he had first line potential. Drouins “conflict” with Tampa is that he wasn’t getting ice time and that changed after the 2016/17 season. Drouin has now had two seasons in a row where he hasn’t been able to surpass that production. Colorado would much rather take a gamble with cousins or Bryam or whoever they draft at fourth overall who could absolutely develop into “elite” players. Their pick probably won’t play next year anyways like you said, but i think fourth overall upside is much higher than drouins at this point. Drouin is an interesting player. He’s shown flashes of elite potential and then flashes of bust. Colorado wont move 4th for him. He’s been a 50 point guy thus far into his career. That’s not worth 4th

I love Lehkonen. Even if he ends up a career bottom 6'er, I love his game. I'll be happier if he discovers his scoring touch though.

so the same thing that plagued him in Tampa bay, criticism on his complete level. So he can produce when everything is bouncing his way, but when its not he wont battle through it? Sure the splits are jarring but this isnt a new thing for him. He was critized for his effort and fought Tampa about him having to earn his ice time.

Drouin wasn't suited for C and it was his first year with a new team, so I don't put much stock into that season. I'm not a fan of Drouin personally, but he has the ability to produce more than he has shown.

The problem with evaluating a 1st round pick as what it "might be" in comparison to a player that already is, is that there's a tendency to ignore what that pick "could be".
#4 could be a bust, equivalent to the player you trade it for, less than the player you trade it for, 2-5 years away from being NHL ready, etc.
A young top 6 player that consistently puts up 50 points and is established at the NHL level and will be a solid contributor at a time when your team is ready to compete, is worth more than a player who might be equal or better in the future.
The problem with always weighting in favor of the future, is falling into the trap of being unable to compete in the here and now. We'll call that the Oilers stratagem. They could have traded Yakupov or Puljujarvi for more immediate and certain improvements. In fact, they could have traded all but two of their last 10 or so 1st rounders (Draisaitl and McDavid) and still be in a better position than they are today. Sure, they'd miss out on someone like Nurse or Nuge. They wasted Eberle and Hall while they had them.

Just look at some of the recent 4th overall picks:
11 Adam Larsson
12 Griffin Reinhart
13 Seth Jones
14 Sam Bennett
15 Mitch Marner
16 Puljujarvi

I'd take Drouin over all but Jones and Marner, and I don't even like Drouin. The rest are lesser players or replaceable.

His work ethic is still questionable at times ... he's actually shown improvement from last season.

The important thing is that his attitude is better and he has been improving in those areas. He won't be the first or last player that matures as they progress in their career.
