Why would Ottawa trade for Lucic and then have to give a draft pick or two to Seattle to take on his contract? It's a lose lose situation for them. Boedker had almost twice as many points as Lucic on a bad team.
The 1st round pick is worth more than what Ottawa is giving up. Potentially a lot more if Edmonton still manages to get a top 10 pick or win the lottery.
Forget everything else. In it's simplest form, this trade is a 1st round pick for a 2nd and a 3rd. I don't think any GM would turn that down.
If Boedker and Lucic both had a 1 year contract at $3M, most GMs would take Lucic. In this scenario, their contracts ARE equal. Each player earns $3M next season after Edmonton pays Lucic's signing bonus.
Everything to this point is in Ottawa's favor and an easy yes for any GM.
Ottawa retaining $1.5M is a non-factor. They have to spend to the cap anyway and this counts toward that.
That's why Ottawa does this.
Why Ottawa doesn't do this, is they don't think Seattle will take Lucic at that price.
Let's say Seattle demands a 1st instead. If Edmonton's pick is better than the one they give to Seattle, it's still an okay trade. Say Edmonton's is #20 and they give Seattle SJ's pick, which is #25. They've only gained 5 spots from the Lucic trade, but there are no negatives to the trade so it's still a net gain.
Ottawa only loses if Seattle refuses to take Lucic at all, which IS a possible outcome. In that case Ottawa simply took a 1st round pick for Lucic's contract. If Lucic plays well, it's a win-win. If he doesn't, Ottawa isn't in contending mode anyway and can afford to ride it out.
