Look at the career ppg, the fact nuge is a center and kills penalties makes him significantly more valuable
I
have looked at the career p/g. In the last 4 years, Ehlers is .67 and RNH is .69 p/g.
If you count the extra 4 years RNH has in NHL experience, that 0.02 gap becomes 0.04.
Yes RNH is a center and kills penalties, and that has some value, I'm not arguing that. I'm saying it is not "significantly more value".
The value that does present, is mitigated by his contract being significantly shorter.
Given the 2 years of a .71 p/g player vs 6 years of a .67 p/g player, the longer contract is more valuable because that player is also younger with more room to grow.
Winnipeg is in a position where they need a Center and a shake up to get over a playoff hump immediately. RNH's contract expiring is less of a factor for them, because they believe they can win within the 2 years they will have him. Edmonton is nowhere close and has a number of issues to solve. Ehlers will still be around in 2 years, after they have hopefully sorted everything out.
All things considered. Without bias or tinted lenses. RNH for Ehlers is close enough to an even swap and it benefits both teams.
Edit: I should clarify that just because it's fair doesn't mean you have to agree the trade should happen. I'm simply saying it makes sense and the value is there.
