Description
Okay, let's make few presumptions: San Jose Sharks is the Stanley Cup Champion of season 2018-19. Thornton has lifted the trophy he has waited to lift for two decades. He decides to retire.

Now, what I want to see is preparing for the future:
- sign Meier (5-6y), Pavs (2-3y) and Labanc (3-4y) all for 3 years or more.
- sign a good third line center: Johansson is an enticing player. He's not Thornton, but he has good vision and hockey IQ himself also, he's a playmaker first and foremost. He would slot the third line center role nicely. I think Sharks had eyes on him on the last trade deadline so it would be nice to see him in Sharks. I think there are some worries about his injury past but it's a risk you need to take.
- let Donskoi walk and sign a third line winger: there's no room for Donskoi if he doesn't at least take the same contract what he had for the past two seasons ($1,9M). Ennis is quite rough in the making but he has pretty good speed and puck handling skills. I think he would fit somewhat well in the lineup and play those important minutes off. He wouldn't be that costly either.
- I'd love to see Ferland (and we would have the money to sign him) in the Sharks but then the third line would be left with no center or not a good one at least. Suomela isn't quite ready for the role yet in a long term plan.
- I haven't been that fond of Nyquist so I think he should be let go even though I can see that he can make smart plays on the ice. Just too costly for what he brings.
- Erik Karlsson. I'd really love to see him in teal for as long as possible but I just don't see it happening if Sharks can't get rid off some contracts: M. Karlsson, Braun and Dell at least, maybe more. And if Sharks win the Cup, I'd prefer planning how Sharks can go younger with their core in the long stretch and prepare for players to jump into the main team like Merkley, Blichfeld and Chmelevski, and still being competitive with the new signings.

I wll make soon another version of next season's lineup which includes all the realistic trades Sharks have to do to keep Karlsson.

I think Labanc will sign for a bit more as he’s been awesome in the playoffs.

I also think SJ will let Karlsson leave. They had an amazing season this year and they didn’t have him in the lineup for long stretches. Guess it comes down to whether Wilson thinks EK is worth losing a handful of really good complimentary pieces or not

Im not sure that Sharks will start slow rebuild if they win the cup, Wilson will want another, but I think it is necessary especially on blue line.
I think both Meier and Labanc will get bridge contracts, because that just how Wilson does it (like in case of Hertl/Tierney/Sorensen/Donskoi) - maybe Meier might get long term, but it depends on UFA signings and trades. Imo Pavelski gets more term and less money to make cap work.
Agree with letting Nyquist go, not worth the money he might ask (especially with that condotional pick for resigning).

Vlasic, Burns and Simek are definitely not going anywhere. If someone is gone, it will be Braun. I would trade Dell and M. Karlsson as well. Moving Dillon depends on money he will ask (3-3,5 is acceptable but makes things complicated to sign UFA). Resigning E. Karlsson might be risk, he has injury history and according to rumours wants at least 11 million, but definitely top player with his skating, hands and vision. Just needs better partner to do the physical work (like Simek lifted Burns).

Im curious which youngster will get a chance, i excpect Gambrell and maybe another signing in Europe (bottom 6 guy). I would like to see Francouz from Colorado as a backup, he is not really proven but that will make him cheaper, I heard that he wants one way contract so that might be something to make him want to come to SJS - low risk, high reward and if it doesnt work, there will be time to get better backup during season.

Nice thoughts, looking forward on that Karlsson topic.

You may be right. Well, there is some room in cap to give Labanc a contract of 3,9M-4,1M which may be a more reasonable one for Labanc.

Marcus Johansson isn’t a C, even if CF says he is. You would be better off resigning Jumbo for cheaper.

He probably could be, he's been impressive with the Bruins, a smart underrated player.

Well, if the presumption was that Jumbo wants to retire, then that part isn't gonna happen.

True, Johansson isn't playing as a center at the moment. But he has his history playing the role. Maybe it's a long shot but I like the idea. One possibility could be getting Hayes to play as a center and cutting some money somewhere else, i.e. shorter/cheaper Meier's contract. But I don't know how much money it would need to throw at Hayes to get him.

He hasn’t played C fully in nearly 7 years.

Are you sure, have you watched every single game Johansson has played in the last 7 years? lol

Labanc probably gets a big more. Rising tides raise all boats and I think across the board all productive RFA are going to see a bump in salary on the 2nd contract. I also think Nyquist, Karlsson and Donskoi are gone. Based on what Wilson did with Marleau I bet its 2 yrs for Pavelski. if he can find a 3rd year then he should take it. this will be a 35+ contract going forward plus you assumption that SJ wins the cup.

Trade Braun as he is 1 yrs from UFA and in decline.
