Expansion Draft

Created by: Hockeyplayer1
Team: 2016-17 Chicago Blackhawks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 8, 2016
Published: Jun. 8, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Left columns are players forced to be protected or chosen to be protected. Middle column are players protected under the 2 years of professional North American hockey rule.

This does not include the 25% unprotected rule that has been stated. This is difficult to calculate out. Is it payroll for NHL roster or payroll for NHL and AHL affiliate? What are the exact rules here? Anisimov and Kruger would possibly have to be left unprotected.

Players exposed to expansion draft are in the Right Wing column. Plus Anisimov and Kruger depending on the 25% payroll rule. Who do you put on the protection list if they aren't on it?

My prediction is the Chicago Blackhawks lose either Pokka, Anisimov, or Kruger to the expansion draft.

*NOTE: If Schmaltz is not signed before the expansion draft he is technically exposed as well.

What are you assuming falls under "2 years of professional North American hockey"? By the end of next season Teuvo will have 3 seasons completed and Panarin will have 2.

I've read this rule described as "First-and second-year players on entry-level contracts would be exempt from the expansion draft". Both Teuvo and Panarin will be off of their ELC's by the time expansion comes around so they would need to be protected.

This is the best way to show expansion protected/exposed players I have seen on here.

The expansion draft will be held before the 2017 NHL Draft and thus all players will technically still be on their 2016-17 contracts until July 1st 2017.
It is also hard to say about TT because he only played 8 games in North America in 2013-14. Does that count as a season? If not then he falls under the 2 years of NA hockey. If so, then he would be protected over Hartman.

It has been said that NMC's expiring at the end of the 16-17 season will not need to be protected, so I assume that all contract based rules will be treated as if the 16-17 contracts have been fulfilled. Just my interpretation of it though.

Really hope these rules get clarified this month when they announce Vegas, because it's way too confusing with the lingo that is being tossed around right now.

The NHL expansion draft rules are similar to......the strike zone in baseball or contact in basketball. No one know the rules and if their are any rules they change all the time anyway.

The way Friedman explained it, t's not about when the contract end for the first and second year players like it is for those with NMC - it's about number of pro years played by the time the draft happens. Panarin will have played only two years by 2017-18, so he should be considered a 2nd year pro and should be exempt.

You were definitely correct about Teravainen though - he'll either be exposed or need to be protected, if he's still with the Hawks by then.

"This does not include the 25% unprotected rule that has been stated." - Daly said this is no longer a thing.

"*NOTE: If Schmaltz is not signed before the expansion draft he is technically exposed as well." - Why would this be true? It should be that only players signed to contracts will be exposed to the expansion draft.
