My 2019-20 Vision

Created by: Loops
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 1, 2019
Published: May 1, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Salary cap projected to be 83M for 2019-20 so I made my decisions based on that.

Reality Check:
- Leafs won't be able to trade Marleau
- I'd be shocked if Dubas keeps his promise to Nylander regarding a trade
- Kadri may have disappointed a lot of you but he's here to stay
- Connor Brown is the most underrated Leaf. He plays an excellent 200 Foot game and gets criticized for his lack of offense versus being appreciated for his defensive and penalty killing abilities.

Trades:
1) Zaitsev is a salary burden on the Leafs. They'd never got very much for him but with a solid trading history with the Ducks, this could be a good fit. The Ducks will have over 6M cap space in 2019-20 with the majority of their roster signed. They lack RH D so this could prove to a good fit. I mean, we once got Lupul and Gardiner for Beauchemin.

2) Nylander under-performed this year plain and simple. Maybe with a good summer of training, actually going to training camp in the fall, he could be the Willy we all want. However, we still lack a #1 RH RD and I'm not to keen on waiting for one of our prospects to develop. The Canes could use the extra speed and offense and Willy is there answer. With a roster rich in RH RD this is a match made in heaven. Pesce has been an absolute stud in the playoffs playing by Slavin's side. Imagine what he could do playing with Morgs..? I added Julien Gauthier to the deal as I feel on paper a 1 for 1 Nylander for Pesce deal would not be good enough for the Leafs. The second GOAT would fill the void for the Marlies with the loss of Bracco and Moore to the Leafs.

Playoffs:
The Leafs surprised me vs Boston this year. With a lot of criticism on their lack of grit, I think a good handful of players stepped up and showed we do have a physical edge. Adding to much grit could lead the Leafs down a dark path as speed is their strength and the PK is their Achilles heel. Lets stick to the speed and improved cycle game.

This roster gives the Leafs the ability to make a depth trade at deadline pending their in season performance. I would have loved to see a Charlie Coyle type of playing on this squad but I think for now this is as close as they can get working with salary and contracts.

Nylander isnt getting trade. just like he wont shoot 5.4%, he wont miss out on half the season, and this time he will play with players who can actually do something

Where I agree with you there. This is simply just my vision and to me he is the odd man out.

kapanen wont make that much. he isnt worth even 3.5 and there are better players then brown in the organization. using that cap space you could keep nylander and sign someone like stralman who isnt as good but much cheaper so you could keep everyone

Yes he will get traded. But he will not get you Top RHD on one of the best contracts in the league. Nylander is 60 point player on bad contract. We all knew if John T signs that would mean marner or Nylander will be gone. No team can afford 40 million + tied up in 4 forwards. Especially a team with no defense and shaky goaltending.

Unless you like getting bounced in first round every year.

shaky goaltending? just because a team with 4 forwards making 40 million hasnt wone before doenst mean they cant do it. The NHL is a stars league and the leafs have lots. the defense isnt that bad. rielly, muzzin and dermott isnt a bad top 3 with rosen as a number 5 all they need is a 4 and a 6. pittsburgh won with number one defenseman ron hainsey, the leafs have a better defensive core then pittsburgh has had. they have a ton of good prospects like sandin, lilly, borgman, duszak and lindgren

I love how people just say that one team in past 20 years won with bad dcore. So we can do it. Our core hasnt made it passed 1st round but we can do what one of the best team in our generation can do.

Also they had Schultz who scored 50+ points that season. Had 4 players average almost 1 PPG and goalie that carried the team.

Leafs overplay goalie all year and he is terrible when end of season and playoffs come along. Also your defense core is one of the worst in the league.

I agree with the majority of what you wrote and what you did. The only place I disagree with you is on the Nylander vs Pesce value. I think if Nylander is playing his absolute best, Toronto would still have to throw in a kicker to get Pesce, and a decent sized kicker because of how amazing Pesce's contract is. After the season that Nylander just put forth, I think it's Nylander plus something significant, and even if it's an overpay Carolina still likely says no. They don't want to move Pesce, for them to move him some team would have to overpay like crazy.

This is the kind of thought process that leads to complete disappointment. You can't evaluate Pittsburgh's path to the cup vs the route Toronto has to take. Our D-core this year could have gotten away a lot better if we were fortunate enough to drop to a wildcard spot and play the Caps in the first round. Unfortunately we either have Boston or Tampa in round 1 if we finish in the top 3 every year. Tampa and Boston are both teams who expose the hell out of our Dcore and that is exactly why change is needed upfront to improve the back. Not to mention some good points about Anderson being overplayed due to the lack of trust in our backup.
