Is Colin Miller available with him being scratched YES ITS ABOVE THE CAP

Created by: BCAPP
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 9, 2019
Published: May 9, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
So this team is 8.5 million above the cap with 24 players.

It essentially has 5 lines of forwards that I expect to either be in the NHL next year (or maybe retired in Marleau's place), 6 dmen, and 1 D scratch.

I think most would agree Moore has earned his spot as permanent NHLer unless he stinks up his camp
Bracco dominated the AHL this year and has earned a very very good look and similar to Moore should be at least pencilled in to the NHL but not penned in
UFA guys signed from the KHL (vs other european leagues) generally seem to expect to get a good shot at the NHL, they seem less willing to spend extended time in the AHL (vs Korshkov who was a draft pick)
Petan and the Goat are both 11th-14th forwards.

So how can this team get under the cap?

If no trade for a guy like Miller, then they're only 4.5-5 million over, with a couple guys to sign
Options:
(technically trade Matthews/Marner/Tavares would achieve this but I am assuming this is off the table)
1) Marleau retires and cap hit traded
2) Nylander traded
3) Kapanen/Johnson and Brown traded
4) Kadri traded may be close, and Nylander to 3c, likely couldn't afford to get another 3C
5) trade zaitsev

I suppose Hyman could be traded but under 3 million for what is effectively a 2nd line winger is good value

With a trade or UFA signing for a guy like Miller we need to clear about 8 million (the roster below is 8.5 over but has 24 players, so remove about 1 million, 500K or so for breathing room)
To get to 8 million
I think you essentially need to either trade Nylander or Marleau (trade or retire) AND then trade Kapanen/brown/zaitsev/Johnsson

The cap she's a tight

Also is that trade for Colin miller fair, are they that tired of him?

brown and zaitsev are as good as gone. top 4 should be
Rielly - RHD (miller/larsson/whoever)
Muzzin - Dermott

bottom pair is depth guys they have or can sign for cheap

that being said, that’s not enough for miller. borgman is a fringe NHLer and rasanen has taken a hard left turn in his development. i think one of Kapanen/Johnsson are moved for a defenceman, and moore is having an AHL playoff like Johnsson did last year, i expect him to be 3rd line next year, for me forwards look like this

Hyman - Tavares - Marner
Johnsson/Kapanen - Matthews - Nylander
Moore - Kadri - Bracco
4th line doesn’t really matter, whoever makes it

instead of trading away the good players like nylander they will get rid of the bad ones like zaitsev and brown

Trade Brown, Zaitsev and Johnsson, and give Kappy less $ , gotta give more for miller but something can probably be worked out with Johnsson going the other way, and use a third and brown to dump Zaitsev, then you should have 1.5-2 mill of space to sign a #6 D to hold the last spot for 1 year or until Liljegren steals it from him

Who to trade between Johnsson and Kapanen I find an interesting question.

Apparently Kapanen has shown more interest and loyalty to being long term with the organization, and I'd be temped to say he'll be the better player, if nothing else because he is succeeding in the NHL at a younger age.

The flipside however, is Kapanen is a MUCH better right winger than left winger and our organizational RW depth is excellent and our organizational LW depth is actually quite poor. Moore is a RW who can play LW. Marner is a RW. Nylander is a RW/C. Bracco is a RW, Korshkov is a RW.

It leaves us with Hyman, who fits a niche role so great, an old shell of his former self Marleau, and outside of the NHL Mikheyev and depth prospects like Engall. We frankly traded our best LW prospect in Grundstrom earlier in the year.

Brown can technically play both but he is much better on the RW than LW.

I am not convinced Zaitsev is that bad, he looked pretty damn good with Muzzin. As importantly, without Zaitsev our RD is literally Dermott on his offside. Thats it.

He is an ok player but there are much better ones who make a lot less. If they could trade him and sign stralman for under 4 it would be not only an upgrade but they also saving money. Once dermott comes back a top for of rielly, muzzin, dermott and miller is pretty decent. Add rosen and someone else and they are fine
