May Version offseason

Created by: fckmattcooke
Team: 2019-20 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: May 10, 2019
Published: May 10, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Draft:
#4- Matt Boldy
#16- Ville Heinola

Free agency:
Panarin is priority #1, has already said he has interest in Colorado and playing with MacKinnon. Avs need to go get a big name in free agency instead of a few small names, he's the perfect fit.

Trade:
Buy very low on Wennberg, who was a healthy scratch consistently for Columbus. He's a strong skater and good passer who could thrive playing wing with MacKinnon, Panarin, Rantanen, etc.

Year after can easily replace Nieto, Soderberg, Calvert (?) with Bowers, Kaut, and (Boldy?)

Panarin with MacKinnon would be terrifying. I would love to see it though.

Buying low on Wennberg would be smart and makes sense for a team like COL, I do think itll cost more than that. I think a young roster forward, not with a ton of potential but a guy that can fill in would also have to be added

I’d love to see Wennberg on the wing with players who can actually pass the puck and play offensively, that being said other teams will offer more. My guess is that it’ll take. 3rd and 4th, or 3rd and mid to low prospect. I’d look at Cam Morison, a collage player going into his senior year at Notre Dame and a 3rd in 2021(conditional on Morison signing with CBJ) for Wennberg.

I like this for the most part!
Pros:
1. I would love to see panarin with mack
2. Good Francouz signing
Cons:
1. Panarin AAV too much. More like 9.75
2. DO NOT break up Mack and Rantanen. They have unreal chemistry. I'm fine w moving Landeskog off the line
3. Where's Connor Timmins?
4. Jost over Compher for that 2nd line center?
5. I don't think NJD would take that CAP DUMP trade w/o COL retaining some salary
6. Come playoff time, the D tandem of Girard/Makar will get walked over by bigger players. I say use them in situations where you need a goal desperately (or PP), otherwise paid them with some smart brawn (i.e. Cole, Johnson)
7. Wennberg might be a tad passive and I'm apprehensive on his signing as he would most likely get shutdown come playoff time (i.e. J. Gaudreau, T. Jost, M. Zuccarello)

Overall, I love that you're focusing on the Avs! I've been a fan since '97 and man have I had a hard time watching games for the past 10 years. The waiting is finally paying off

I genuinely believe him to be the best player available, and for the avalanche, at #4. assuming it goes Hughes, Kakko, Turcotte. He's gotten comparisons to Hossa and Stone, and scouts believe he could be a future seek winner. I'm a big fan

I agree with you guys that Wennberg is worth more than that, however I believe due to his cap hit & term that Columbus would be willing to accept less, Colorado's one of the only teams who could take him on cleanly.

It will be interesting to see how things play out over the next month going into the draft but at the moment I think the Avs pick one of Turcotte, Dach, or Byram. If Turcotte is gone (which I agree I think he goes to the Hawks at 3) I think the Avs go Dach with Byram being a real possibility.

cons:
1. As a free agent I think Panarin will definitely be in the 10-11 range, just because teams will have to bid with each other, and ads should be willing to pay up for an impact player like him
2. I can agree with that, I just thought Jost and Wennberg together is a little redundant.
3. To start, Timmins will 100% be in the AHL. I think he makes the team as the season progresses, but he just missed an entire year of development, he can take his time in the AHL.
4. Jost no doubt has the higher upside, and since his demotion this year he's been nails. I think 2C is his to lose, and I prefer Compher on the 3rd line, really hard to matchup against.
5. Barbs had a tough year but is still a player, maybe they do retain some.
6. Girard/Makar just proved in this years playoffs that isn't true.
7. Jost and Zuccs were awesome in the playoffs. Wennberg is certainly passive but I think you just have to use him appropriately to get the most out of him.

I completely agree with you. If I had to bet today, I'd say they go Dach. This is just my preference. It will definitely be interesting in the combine/ interview portion. I think interviews will move Boldy & Krebs up teams boards.

Wennberg might actually be an important piece for Columbus when all their UFAs leave. If we could get panarin on a 4 year deal that would be ideal. MacKinnon is UFA in 4 years and he deserves all the money. I wonder how he feels being the most underpaid player in the league. Boldy at 4 seems like a reach but I guess after Hughes/Kakko it's wide open between 3 and 8. I want Cozens.
