Not Happening Just Evaluating

Created by: dzad96
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 5, 2019
Published: Jun. 5, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
2 things:

1) I don't think Marner is getting offersheeted. Even if he does, the Leafs will match, UNLESS:
2) He gets offersheeted an insane contract, 10.5+ for 5-7 years, in which case the cost would be 4 first round picks, in which case the Leafs might have to let him go.

So, what would the Leafs roster look like if Marner was offersheeted and gone, and the Leafs got 4 1st round picks instead?

Before I get roasted remember I think this is a very hypothetical scenario which is most likely never going to happen anyways.
Given the hypothetical nature of this post I'm also going to make 2 assumptions, based on recent reports:
1) Marleau gets moved, Kings and AZ have been rumored to be interested.
2) Zaitsev gets moved, and for a decent price. Apparently Zaitsev is "drawing considerable interest around the league"

After the Marleau and Zaitsev moves, Leafs had 18.5 Mil in cap space to work with, doors wide open for lots of possibilities.

After the Spurgeon trade there was 11 Mil in cap space to play with.

Maybe instead of signing Karlsson:
- Panarin
- Gardiner
- Skinner
- Nyquist
- etc

They'd sign someone with the 11 mil worth of cap space after the moves I outlined, not necessarily Karlsson, just threw him in there because he'd be the sexiest option.

Trades
1.
TOR
  1. 2019 1st round pick (PHI)
  2. 2020 1st round pick (PHI)
  3. 2021 1st round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
2022 1st round pick (PHI)
PHI
  1. Marner, Mitchell [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Could be anyone. Saw a Philly AGM doing it the most recently.
2.
TOR
  1. Hossa, Marián
Additional Details:
Obvious here for the Leafs side, they get cap relief through LTIR.
ARI
  1. Marleau, Patrick
Additional Details:
I think this might actually make sense for both teams, AZ gets a guy who helps them get above the cap floor even more than Hossa does, and he's owed very minimal amount of actual dollars, and he can actually play for them in a third or fourth line role and mentor some kids, unlike Hossa is able to.
3.
VAN
  1. Zaitsev, Nikita
Additional Details:
Been seeing reports Vancouver is interested in Zaitsev. This deal is contingent on them actually wanting him, not just taking him as "a favor" (meaning they're not looking for an additional asset in return for taking him)
4.
TOR
  1. Spurgeon, Jared
Additional Details:
Contingent on Spurgeon signing an extension, say 6.75 X 6 years.
MIN
  1. Johnsson, Andreas
  2. 2020 1st round pick (TOR)
Additional Details:
Johnson might actually sign for more money, doesn't really matter for the sake of this trade. MIN only accepts if they don't think they can resign him before next offseason.
5.
TOR
  1. 2019 3rd round pick (NYI)

What about trading him to a team with a solid young star in return that they can sign to cheaper? Raantanen, Werenski, etc.

wanna know who's owed way less salary than Marleau? Like less than 20% of Marleau's money? Marian Hossa.

Haha yeah... https://www.capfriendly.com/armchair-gm/team/1192184 I tried that already, did not get popular reviews by the CapFriendly faithful.

Fair enough, but at least Marleau can actually play. This applies the same logic as when the Blue Jackets traded Horton to the Leafs for Clarkson about 5 ish years ago. Both were bad contracts but at least Clarkson could physical suit up and play at the time.

I know, but only 2019, 2020, and 2021 are available on AGM for trading.

Also Hossa is owed 1 million in actual dollars for two more years (total of 2 million)
After July first Marleau is only owed 1.25 million actuall dollars, so they would save 750,000 in cash. Nice try tho.

Man every post on here you just hate on. No matter what. Look into it before you criticize.

Arizona is already well above the cap floor so that would not be a reason for them to take on the Marleau contract.

Hossa's contract is 80% insured. Yotes pay 200K per year. It was a good try, because I know what I'm talking about.

How does LTIR work? Can you put Horton and Hossa on LTIR and save the full cap hit? If you can, why can't Arizona?

Arizona can, problem is they still have to pay those guys the actual money, it just doesn't count against the cap. And for a poor team like Arizona who doesn't spend money that's a problem. For rich teams like Toronto, Montreal, NYR, etc, it is not an issue.

For example Toronto would be comfortable spending 10 million on guys who don't play for their team, where as Arizona would not.

Fair enough, my point that you quoted above still stands. Regardless wether its 5 million or 500,000 money is money, especially to cheap owners or teams with low budgets.

Not talking about Hossa and Marleau anymore. It's a general example explaining the previously discussed point of why teams like Toronto are more comfortable with guys on LTIR than teams like Arizona typically are.

this is a great thread dzad, thank you for stimulating my mind, others like to be cavemen and prefer not to philosophize the thoughts, umm 25....
I don't think it will ever happen, but it is something worth of thought rather than the other junk on here.
thanks again
