Created by: jluqueSF
Team: 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 6, 2019
Published: Jun. 6, 2019
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
a) to stave of the offer sheets the leafs will need to sign KK/AJ to 4.227M+ contracts (would be 1st/3rd; rather than a 2nd)
b) to stave off any Marner offer sheet he will need $10.568M+ (4-1sts; rather then 2-1's/2/3)
c) teams will need to reach the floor (OTT / NJ / VCR) so the Marleau contract has "value" as the buyout is just $0.833M in real $$
d)IMO Zaitsev has been underrated; while paird with Muzzin he was ok as a #2RHD, people may poo poo the $ and thats fair, but its not an immovable contract
e) as much as i like what Brown/Kadri bring, their $ may be too high
f) Nylander may be a luxury that we can't afford, but is also the best asset to flip for D. help.
g) i see that its over by $0.32M; but with Hyman/Dermott to open on LTIR that will free up enough (or you can maneuver players from the AHL to NHL to save the $ each day)

Miller is not 1st paired, he was a healthy scratch at times this past year.

Dont know about Murphy, have not seen him play enough.

Also doubt you can get much for Zaitsev+

If you're going to pay Johsson/Kap that much you're getting long deals (6/7 years)
But thats an area the leafs have to exploit for cheapness. Can't worry too much about the offersheet

agree that Miller is a better 2/3 as is Murphy; but beggars can't be choosers when looking RHD and stay under the $.
I did consider a Kadri/Hamonic package (contingent on Hamonic re-upping)
In the end for Zaitsev, if we can get a 3rd pair D + middle prospect and/or 3rd to 4th rd pick i'll take it

I believe buyout period ends prior to Marleau's bonus being paid. So Ottawa, if they bought him out, would mean they would have to pay him his bonus. (that isn't happening). Marleau will not waive his NMC for Ottawa.

I'd like to get Kap at a O. Kase type $$; and AJ for similar + a bit; but to be proactive and not low ball them i set up these deals to show it can work + with AJ we are buying a year of UFA too

Miller is 3 at best, despite his salary.
You dont want to overplay a 3rd pair at a 1st pair role.

D will be eaten alive

Hamonic likely costs Kapanen +

Nah, none of the trades work

OTT trade - Marleau won't waive his NMC for any other but a western team. The closer to SJ the better, since his family is returning there

FLA trade - if FLA is really getting both Bob and Bread, you can bet anything on them not being able to take Zaitsev's contract without them shedding no cap in the move. Zaitsev to FLA is very unlikely.

EDM trade - nah, an 8 goal winger is not getting a conditional 2nd. Just a third, if TOR is lucky.

CHI trade - value-wise it could work, but they don't need Kadri, plain and simple. They have their centers figured out.

VGK trade - I'd imagine VGK looking to get something closer to the return from the Montour trade. Miller and Montour as players are quite similar... I'd imagine they'd get a first from some team

DAL and VAN moves are so small I have really nothing to say about them...

FLA trade - if FLA is really getting both Bob and Bread, you can bet anything on them not being able to take Zaitsev's contract without them shedding no cap in the move. Zaitsev to FLA is very unlikely. >>>>> considered Pysyk back, but prefered Weegar+pick+prospect

CHI trade - value-wise it could work, but they don't need Kadri, plain and simple. They have their centers figured out. >>> Toews not getting younger, can he do all that he has been doing for the last 10 years? or maybe Kadri takes some of that Burden. Strome is a nice #2, but lacks Def. and can't PK

VGK trade - I'd imagine VGK looking to get something closer to the return from the Montour trade. Miller and Montour as players are quite similar... I'd imagine they'd get a first from some team >>>>>>> its funny if you read above everyone says he's barely a 3rd pairing D-man. i disagree think he's a 2; and 2's for a cash strapped teams don't warrant a 1st rd pick

DAL and VAN moves are so small I have really nothing to say about them...

Why would Ottawa pay Marleau's signing bonus (which they would have to do they were the ones buying them out) and then turn around and buy him out? Pay millions of dollars in actual money (not Ottawa's MO) all for a mid level prospect?

it would occur after the bonus is paid, by TML, and paying $416,666 this year and next (buyout cost), is better than paying Gaborik $3,175.000 and $3,075,000 this year and next (real salary $); and also Marleau's cap hit is higher than Gaborik, so reaching the floor is easier and cheaper for Eugene

The point I have already made is you cannot buy out Marleau after his bonus his paid. The buy out period ends before his bonus is due. Thus, if Toronto pays his bonus, you cannot buy him out as the buyout period has gone by.

apologies, you are correct, however the premise still works as the Buy out would be $3.833M vs the Gaborik owed $ of $6.25M; if they even added Zach Smith's $6.5M owed over the next 2 years the financial benefit to the Sens is apparent, and advantageous to them
