Leafs would rather pay Marleau 6.25m for one year rather than 5.25m Dion for two. I'm sure Dion's NMC/NTC preludes beings a Leaf, Where's Kappy?. Liljegren and Holl starting six? Yikes.

To which I will add that the Buyout calculator says that Phaneuf's cap hit in the second year (if Toronto buys him out) is nearly the same, so beaching him immediately doesn't do much even though it carves about $3M off the cap this year.

Did Phanuef play for the Whalers, after all didn't the Whales move 25 years ago? My Alberta brother in law was (still his) a Whale fan. His mancave has Whale gear.
